My husband had fondly spoken often of this restaurant as he had taken many clients to dine there during his many visits to AS from the late 80's through until the early two thousands. He was excited to show me Alice Springs and recall his fond memories of the town, people and places. How fortunate we were to have enjoyed a fantastic time, exploring so much of the MacDonnell ranges as well as visiting many of the historical and cultural highlights in the town. After a long day out in the gorges we decided to head out for dinner, not having booked anywhere. My husband said first place to try would be the Overlanders steakhouse as it was always his favourite when in town. If we couldn't get in then we would book for the next night. We waited patiently while the people before us were seated. Happy in the thought that just maybe we might get a table. After about 5 minutes a mature aged dark haired lady came back to the front desk. Apologetically and smiling at her, I admitted we didn't have a booking but was there any chance of a table. One would have thought I asked her to part the Red Sea. She huffed back at me that she had clients she needed to settle and see to and how they taken the trouble to make a booking, Then condescendingly she stated, I guess if you sit up at the bar we might fit you in when others leave. (We are not drinkers and my hubby is diabetic so not having any time frame as to how long the wait would have been wasn't an option). I smiled refusing to be drawn to her level of negativity and looked at my husband who said no. I said, thank you No and turned to leave. She shouted quite aggressively and in a very condescending tone after me "good luck getting a table anywhere in town tonight". I just waved as we parted, smiled and replied "we will" . We proceeded out to Lasseters and had a great night of really good food and I won on the pokies does management know just how rude and arrogant their front of staffers are ? I will never recommend this establishment other than to avoid it.
We knew when we booked this was a 'tourist' attraction and had heard the prices were high. But we wanted our kids to experience this outback icon. The decor & memorabilia were fabulous. The owner apologised that a staff member was in hospital so the staff we had, had little idea what they were doing. All good. Let me go backwards. Our steaks although expensive were fabulous! My cider was replaced immediately when we said I was given dry instead of sweet. However I do need to mention the Tasting platters. We had 2 Tasting Platters for an entree between 4. (They were an entree on the adult menu & a main meal on the kids menu). At $28 for literally a bite size piece of roo buffalo Croc & camel, I think the price needs looking at!! I have hardly seen a smaller entree & at that price/ quantity we were thankful our kids DIDN'T have them as their main meal as they would have been so hungry! But that said the experience was lovely, the owner was lovely and gave us menus to take home as souvenirs. Definitely a must do but do it for the experience!
Of all the meals we had in Alice we'd remember the Overlander as the stand out for quality food and service. Our table of 9 sat down late at 8:00pm as most of the other tables had ordered so we were lucky to have missed the rush. The food is like a great pub meal from 20 years ago or a gastro pub in terms of the quality of the meals. The decore is a little cheesey outback style with a lot of the sort of decore you'd see in an old country pub hanging from the walls. All in all I'd recommend anyone looking for a great steak and casual atmosphere to give them a go, happy we went. The tasting plate of camel, buffalo etc was probably the onty so so meal on the table. Cost was around $800 for 9 ppl mainly as we bought a bottle of wine for $250 from the cellar.
The Overland Steakhouse is so interesting there are animal skins hanging on the walls, international flags on the table. Go all out when your here the food is so good and it's a very cool dining experience.
