You get what you pay for ... this is a Japanese place that is good for one thing the weekend all-you-can-eat sushi buffet. The food is average but the price is also very good for the bulk you get. I would not say this place...is stars or below or stars or above it is average.
I got some sashimi and a tuna roll to go. They were out of yellowtail which was a bummer, but not the end of the world. The sashimi was nice but I'm not sure I'd get it again. The roll was okay- the rice wasn't...seasoned well (I'm not sure they use vinegar at all) and it had the obligatory cream cheese. Mondays they have for rolls; I'd likely go back on a Monday for that. I was happy I had wasabi at home, because it wasn't included in the take-out boxes. They also don't include pickled ginger. The servers were very friendly, and my order was ready fairly quickly. There is indoor and outdoor dining, and the atmosphere is pleasant. Rating:
After seeing the two star ratings on tripadvisor, my boyfriend and I decided to travel to Condesa to try this sushi restaurant. This is our first time in Mexico, and I thought it would be nice trying something other than Mexican food since we...had been eating purely Mexican food for the past few days. I personally am a sushi lover, and love to go to sushi restaurants. First of all, the prices on the menu weren't great. We ordered baby squid for appetizer, which is about pesos, and out came two squids each the size of my finger. They were raw not coated with anything, but inside it was filled with something soft, cream cheese like stuffing( but it definitely didn't taste like cream cheese). I've had raw squid before various of times and know how to properly clean a squid, but not once did I ever have a piece of soft bone (Cephalopod) stuck in my throat. My boyfriend and I also tried their Teriyaki special, which is buy two for the price of one. There was nothing to be praised about, it was overly sugary and definitely not worth pesos. The miso soup that came with the meal was the worst of our meal. It was so salty, the soy sauce wasn't nearly as salty as the miso soup. The special roll that was recommended to us by our waiter was disappointing as well. It was covered with extensive amount of sesame, and the tempura shrimp inside was mainly breading, you can barely see the shrimp. Last but not least, they didn't even bring out wasabi for our sushi...... we had to specifically request it. Which sushi restaurant serves sushi without wasabi? My overall opinion about this restaurant is to avoid at all cost. Best to stick with a chain sushi restaurant.
Nuvo is a nice little sushi restaurant on the corner of Saltillo and Campeche, very close to Nuevo Leon/Campeche in Condesa. It's not a big place but they make up for it with great service, food, and half tables open to the street so you...can enjoy the fresh air while you eat. They have all the traditional and fusion appetizers, rolls and dishes that the chain places have for the same or better prices, but much more generous portions. The waiters really go out of their way to make you feel welcome and make sure you feel at home. I've only eaten there a couple times and even still receive a wave, smile and a good afternoon whenever I walk by. Combine all this with the daily specials (two for one roll days, for all you can eat, for tepanyaki, for drinks, etc, and you can have a great meal at an even better value if you take advantage of the specials. Try it out, you won't regret it!
