The Mustard Seed is a rare exception (from what I can tell it's one of 2, maybe 3 quality-food-focused spots in town . Housed in a small, quaint cottage, it's loaded with charm. And the food and service are great. It's definitely pricey, but IMO worth it. I happened to be there during UC Davis commencement weekend (not intentionally and they still happily seated me without a reservation as I'd arrived early and promised not to take too much time. The menu was limited given the special occasion weekend, but I still had a fantastic Cesar salad and truly delicious plate of seared scallops with black rice, asparagus, and heirloom carrots topped with a luxurious red curry sauce. The portions were abundant, but not in a grotesque way. My server was super kind and overall, I highly recommend splurging on this spot vs. others in town. If I had any recommendations it would be to try to treat the mosquitoes on the back porch. : .
What a great meal and service! Kim our waiter was the tops!
It pains me to write a review of this nature but I refuse to remain silent. Long story short, I have been to this establishment multiple times over the past couple of years. I have gone with my mom, my mom and friends, my second cousin, and with a friend on my most recent visit. Each of these times, Tasia (spelling? has sort of snubbed us. However, when either my mom and/or I go with friends that frequent the restaurant multiple times per week (usually , we are treated like we belong. This is very sad. I told our friends the other day that I will not go there unless I go with them as long as ownership stays the same. It 's very sad and inexcusable. Every single customer should be treated the same way. The above being said, Tiffany, Steven, and our waiter this last time (Josh are awesome! Top notch!! Cool people! The pork loin was very fatty this last time and the female owner was filling water glasses and walked by us several times and never refilled ours. Yes, I could have asked. However, I shouldn 't have had to, so I didn 't. My friend is on a strict gluten-free diet and Josh immediately let us know about all of the options and filled us in on the fact that gluten-free bread was available. My friend had the cauliflower steak. Awesome! Yum! I 'm not even a cauliflower fan but savored the bites I had! Josh was stellar!
For a nice afternoon or evening dining experience, we recommend the Mustard Seed. Price is reasonable based on the quality and quantity. Staff is absolutely in our top 100 best and most attentive.
What a delightful find!! We’re visiting from Salt Lake City, UT. We had a delicious meal (pear/spinach salad, grilled pork loin, puff pastry tomato basil soup/crème brûlée), all fantastic! Loved meeting the owners and staff who work wonderfully as a team!! They were very attentive and such a pleasure to talk with. We’ll be back!
