Old English Fish Chips is a great addition to Forestville. Lovely melt in your mouth grilled fish, crispy chips and Yummy burgers
This place was okay when it first opened with a real English chippy feel but then got taken over and the standards dropped. I don't like their basic fish n' chips as they use a very soft fish, maybe Basa, which is too soft to hold batter well but if you ask for one of the many other types they offer on their website or through Menulog/Uber Eats such as Flathead, Snapper, John Dory, etc they never seem to have them. Last time I ordered through one of the delivery services the driver had to phone me from the shop to say that Barramundi was the only non-Basa fish they had, which doesn't say much for a Fish Shop. I've tried them maybe three rimes since the new owners came in but now buy my fish and chips from the chicken shop opposite which does a much better job. Such a shame after such a good start.
The fish was overcooked and mushy, but the chips were somewhat crispy, unlike traditional English fish and chips. The batter was disappointing, being soggy and oily, giving the impression that it was cooked at a low temperature in old oil. While the prices were low for a generous portion size, the more I ate, the worse it tasted, making it difficult to justify as a good value choice.
So disappointed! Working late on a cold rainy night, really fancied fish and chips. Ordered the flathead and chips. It was over cooked, the fish was tough and the chips left a foul taste. Our family has given this place plenty of opportunities to produce a quality reduction. Enough! We won't bother again.
