Having lived in Asia for 6 years, I prefer authentic Japanese food. My go to place for AUCE Japanese is Jukai in Dartmouth, but I decided to try Mizu for their AUCE with a family member. We both regreted our decision. This location has a very open concept design, resulting in it being very noisy which makes for an unpleasant experience. This is not the restaurant's fault, but the customers who cause the noise. During our early Saturday dinner, several families had screaming children with them, with some parents allowing their children to stand up on seats in the booths. The menu is limited when it comes to authentic Japanese food (sashimi, nigiri, maki, uramaki, and temaki). If you are looking for westernized Japanese food, Mizu might meet that need. Although if you are looking for authentic Japanese, try elsewhere (i.e. Jukai Dartmouth, or Sushi Jet Larry Uteck).Quick review of what we ordered: Sashimi is good with fair size portion slices, although slow to arrive at the table...likely because sashimi is costly to the restaurant resulting in a loss if customers eat too much of it. Red tuna sashimi is not offered. Nigiri is made with too much rice/veggies and limited fish protein. Maki and uramaki were also made with too much rice.. Rice is a filler to fill up customers because rice is cheap. Too much of the filling is veggies (cucumber, etc) instead of fish protein.Something unique at Mizu that I had not experienced at other restaurants was the beef sashimi (raw beef slices). It was very slightly braised on the outside and raw throughout the rest of the slice at this location. Not bad but would probably not try again.Good selection of menu appetizers. The calamari and raw squid rings were good. Beef and chicken skewers were also good and flavorful. This location has a self serve dessert bar with custard shooters, mini cakes, chocolate pudding, and ice cream. I did not try any of it.On a good note, staff are friendly and quick. The restaurant, tables/chairs, and washrooms are clean.I would not recommend this location, and it definitely does not compare to the authentic experience and food at Jukai so I would not return to Mizu. For almost $95 with tax and tip for two adults with no purchased beverages/alcohol, Mizu is not quite worth it.
One of the best Japanese sushi restaurants in HRM. Highly recommend.
The food was not as good as before. Spring rolls cold in the middle, Sushi not delicious, and the curry fish balls...let's me say I would pay someone to watch them chew and swallow one lol. Last year I had a great experience but after last time I won't be back. For the quality the all you can eat is way overpriced. Just go buy 40 dollars worth of sushi somewhere else and you will be happier. All that being said they have great service beside the fact that they didn't bring one of our items and the restraunt is pretty. But if the food sucks nothing else matters.
WARNING THEY ARE RACIST TO BLACK PEOPLE!!! Bayers lake location- I have experienced two separate instances. They will rush you out of there and keep harassing you when it’s time to pay to make sure you pay because they fear you won’t due to your skin colour. Black people seriously watch out for this they only did it to our table and I feel like they don’t understand how hurtful and wrong that is— if no stars was an option I would’ve hit that! Not impressed, horrible experience!
