I got the opportunity to go back to the restaurant this year, and I must say, it was a different experience by far! We arrived in prime dinner time, at 6pm on a Sunday night of a long weekend. I expected the place to be packed, and feared the long wait of which I remembered last year. Well, I don't know if it is because it is now school time, or just what, but the service was faultlessly quick. The waters were constantly full as well. There was a few other groups there, one of them rather large. I ordered the Sunday Special, a fire roasted pork tenderloin, So very good! The sauce was delicious, and I asked for a white roll (which I wasn't charged for) to sop up the leftovers. My mum got the pan-fried haddock, which was lightly crumbed, flakey, and tender. The tartar sauce was delicious, and appeared to be house-made (tho I could be wrong). We ordered the bumbleberry crumble for dessert, and she nicely split it in two separate dishes for us, again at no extra charge. Although our server appeared to grumpy, I soon decided that she was actually just efficient, and maybe just has a brisk demeanour. So don't be put off by initial assumptions based on appearance with her, as she was actually very nice in actions! So, best of luck with this place. The view is gorgeous, the food is a big hit or a near miss, (I would say go with the special, not the chowder) and the servers are nicer than you might first assume. I repent of my previous review!
R&G's is a good restaurant, a step above your usual diner-type place. It's clean and bright with some tables having a lovely river view. Service is friendly and efficient. Food-wise, they have standard diner fare but better quality ingredients. It also helps that many of their items are made in-house rather than bought frozen. I've tried many things on their menu and have never been disappointed. They also make a great chocolate shake, according to my family. I can vouch for their lemon merigne pie, yum! Prices are very reasonable and we've never had a long wait for our food. This is definitely our go-to restaurant when heading to or from the valley.
You know things are bad when the Mccains French fries are the best thing on your plate. I had often heard of this family restaurant so we tried it on Saturday It is clean and has a pleasant view of the river. My husband had fish chowder which he said was fine. I , encouraged by him, ordered the Monte Christop (or some such name) sandwich, a specialty of theirs, being bread fried in egg batter, like French toast, with ham and cheese. Also, it turned out , some kind of pickle relish. Well, perhps it was my fault for ordering such a weird thing but really it was barely edible. To top it off, they only had Pepsi, which is always frustrating for Diet Coke drinkers like myself. The special was corned beef and cabbage.
We stopped in here after having visited the Blue Beach Fossil review at the recommendation of one of the employees there. It was not even 5 minutes away, and we chose a booth with a lovely view of Minas Bay. There seemed to be only one server for the entire restaurant, however services was good. She quickly brought us our water, but instead of taking our drink and meal orders separately she took them together at the same time. Having become accustomed to having an opportunity to take a look over the menu with a drink in hand this was a tad disappointing. Not getting to eat fish very often and being in Nova Scotia, I felt it only fitting to get that local fish in which I was given the option of both battered or breaded which I opted for the latter. My mother in-law also got fish however hers was pan fried with vegetables and potatoes. Everything to the food was excellent, fish flaked apart very nicely and the vegetables were cooked without being overdone. My partner got a chicken and apple wrap of which she enjoyed so much that she refused to share any of it with me! Overall we were very delighted with the food we got, and other than a bit of an issue with the speed of the service we would definitely go back. From what I can tell this is a locally operated and owned restaurant which adds to the enjoyment.
