Amazing food! Recommend getting the jalapeno poppers, the kabocha, the mountain yam (comes with flamed tobiko fish eggs on top), and the simmered pork belly which were our favorites. Their yuzu chuhai is made with real yuzu juice. From the pictures I thought it would be heavily fried food, but it was actually flame grilled to perfection and super thinly battered then crisped. Amazing taste for each plate, not oily or heavy at all. You can tell they take their cooking seriously! So delicious, will definitely be backVery cute eclectic place with friendly staff and atmosphere. Fun vibe, good place to bring friends and share bites.
The first thing I did after dinner at Fujiyama Texas was see where I could get kushikatsu on the mainland back home. And to my surprise, I could not find any places that specialized in it in the Bay Area, LA, OC, or SD. In fact, I'm still looking, so if I want these amazing fried skewers again anytime soon, I'll have to also book another flight to Oahu. But before discussing the food, I'll admit that service is slow and you'll probably be flagging servers down a lot. There are not many of them for how big the space is, and if you order after a table with 8+ people who are ordering a couple dozen skewers, you'll be waiting quite a while. Yes, that's unfortunate and can be frustrating, but if you can have a drink or do something to enjoy yourself, I think it's worth the wait. And now, the not skewers: Tako Wasabi: cold, chewy, and gets those sinuses clear so you can eat a bunch of skewers. Cold Tofu: cold, subtle, and not as strong in flavor so you'll have a nice contrast to eat a bunch of skewers. And the skewers: Prime Chuck Rib: the ultimate skewer, full of that amazing beef fattiness that makes the entire piece melt in your mouth. It's perfect fried as it has another layer of umami and a contrasting texture. Pork Belly: Also delicious and fatty be careful not to let this one get too cold or it won't be as easy to eat. Wiener: It's a fried hot dog, so it's arguably the best thing on the menu. Meat Dumpling: I think this is a fried siu mai I was expecting a tsukune, but this was still delicious and juicy. Soft Shell Crab: If you've been to an Asian buffet, this is that salty, oily deliciousness that you want from crab. Ahi: I was expecting more since this is in Oahu, but it was just okay. Ahi is probably better raw, like in poke. Garlic: Tastes amazing, but perhaps a little overdone as it's starting to develop that bitter flavor. Kabocha: Sweet and oily and all around pretty good. Nice to have this when you're eating a bunch of fried meat. Shiitake and Shimeji Mushroom: Pretty good and nutty, and like the kabocha, having something that isn't meat to break all of the immediate heaviness is nice. Mochi: One of the best things on the menu fried mochi has the perfect melted chewiness that you expect, and when fried in the same oil that all of your meat was just in, it's absolutely delcious. Cheese: If you've had a mozzarella stick, you've had something just like this (except it's cheddar here) and you know it's going to be amazing. Get 5. Quail Egg: Reminds me of the Filipino skewers, kwek kwek, but tempura batter isn't the same, and the eggs were overcooked.Get yourself an Asahi and a ton of skewers, because you're in for a treat.
Located within Beauty Mark shopping Mall a small business building. A small amount of parking in the front lot plus on King Street or Wiliwili Street. Landmarks are between University of Hawai'i Federal Credit Union and 76 gas station. Haven't been here for breakfast but the dinner is amazing! Fantastic customer friendly service and amazing food!
While the menu does include salads, rice and noodle dishes, and a limited selection of sushi and soups, most patrons seem to flock here specifically for the kushikatsu. I've heard the Japanese breakfast is especially popular as well. If you're planning to visit with a large group, I recommend making a reservation. The bar area was quite busy during our visit, specifically with couples. The decor is very simple and reminiscent of a diner, but the small size of the restaurant allows for quick service and food delivery. There’s also a good selection of beers, including Asahi on tap during our visit. Overall, I would recommend Fujiyama Texas for a unique twist on traditional Japanese cuisine and for late-night snacking, as they’re open until 11 PM on weekdays and midnight on weekends.
