I *almost* forgot how much I enjoyed this place! I first found out about it back in high school, when my 先生 took our Japanese club officers to their former Ala Moana location. That was my first mentaiko pasta experience, and it was so memorable that I swore to return someday. Fast forward years later- my brother, my friend, and I were looking for a Monday lunch spot in Kaimuki the other day. My first choices were closed on Mondays, and I remembered that Pietro moved to Kaimuki a while back, so it was the obvious choice. The mentaiko pasta was no longer on the menu, but we were able to order several bangers: *Pietro rainbow salad $15.95 : layered with raw potato, green leaf lettuce, carrots, and daikon with bell pepper rings on the side. All of the veggies were fresh and crisp, and paired perfectly with their original and sesame/miso dressings. I gotta make my salads like theirs! *calamari fritti rings $10.75 : lightly fried- super nice! *pork and eryngii spicy cream sauce $22.95 : eryngii mushroom, onions, and spicy pork in a garlic cream sauce topped with fried onions and garlic chips. This was full of flavor! *hot tarako and ika pasta $23.25 : had the slightest fish egg flavor and was generously sprinkled with red peppers. I inhaled this; it was just enough spice to not overwhelm the pasta, yet had a strong kick. *chicken and eryngii mushroom yuzu-kosho sauce $20.75 : chicken, eryngii mushroom and lettuce tossed in a yuzu pepper butter sauce. The tanginess of the yuzu made the pasta pop, and honestly, who doesn't love a good butter sauce. This was stellar. I'm happy to report that Pietro was as great as I had remembered. Looking forward to more lunch/dinner dates here in the future :
Pietro's is Italian Japanese fusion. You may have seen bottles of their dressing, which are sold in stores. While the food was good, I thought the dish I ordered (Fresh Mixed Mushrooms) wasn't particularly special. Don't get me wrong, it was tasty, just not something that would stand out on its own. To me, what will be memorable to me is the raw potato salad. It was very unique, or at least I have never previously heard of it. It's grated and thin, served with sides of their delicious dressings! I was sure to try some of the salad with each of the dressings, and all except the lemon-based dressing was my favorites! Service was good attentive as well. We never had empty water cups. It's not a large restaurant. It was a pleasant atmosphere when I visited, with lights strung around the walls for the holiday season. Definitely recommend checking out Pietro's, as you can get some interesting/different pasta options and do be sure to order a raw potato salad!
Love the raw potato salad and dressings! Love the Italian Japanese fusion! Really miss the Ala Moana location. No problem with the Kaimuki location, just a little further for me now coming from the west side. Two thumbs up for the great dishes. Service was also good.
We've been wanting to try here for years but just never got the opportunity. So, when we were in the mood for pasta we remembered this restaurant. Quiet environment and friendly service. The mushroom pizza feeds 2 and the seafood pasta feeds 2. The fried calamari was soft and not too salty. We also ordered green tea. Overall, the flavor for all three dishes were good. Prices are about what we expected for pasta. Bill was $70+ not including tip.
