The team around chef Thomas Goels does not cease to amaze! Supported by the recently recruited new staff, the kitchen ultimately perfected its culinary style: a hearty, yet delicate countryside cuisine with an international twist. The wine selection has been substantially widened, so please do ask for the wine list or trust the recommendation of the sommelier. The service is as usually attentive, but not invasive. For me the Hill remains a Michelin Star contender!
We had to give it a try as it is a member of JRE, the one-day-to-be-Michelin hopefuls. Very close to notorious Grinzing restaurant area. We were extremely lucky to park right at the entrance, otherwise finding a place in the rather narrow street might be a tiresome procedure. First impression of the restaurant – very minimalistic, far more bistro than a fancy restaurant. Same for table setup and chairs. Restrooms on the lower (bar) floor spacious enough for the capacity, very decent and clean. Service impeccable, friendly and helpful. Wine list is fine, especially regarding Austrian wines, though the unusual presentation is disturbing - listing by vintage rather than producer. Different for difference sake. Markups on the lower end of the Viennese wine pricing policy (which is hardly wine-geek friendly), so very good wines can be found at a reasonable level. Key point, food. A short menu, which is good, offering an interesting mix of seafood and meat alternatives. To begin with, a surprisingly innovative simplistic amouse-bouche with e.g. salted dehydrated capers. Beef tartare one of the best I have had, a must. Definitely the very best Topfenschmarrn ever – all desserts were actually excellent. Main courses – huge and delicious, faultless, but more on conservative than innovative side. My impression of the kitchen overall rated 16 on a 1 to 20 scale. What I missed was a 5-6 course tasting menu, so that we could try more of the chef’s creations. Three course á la carte meal is as much as your ordinary human can take for a serious dedicated lunch.Highly recommended, one of my best recent Viennese experiences. Clearly not cheap (except if compared to Coburg or Steirereck), but well worth every cent. Book in advance and use Uber rather than taxi if you are a Vienna visitor, distance from the main hotels is not negligible.
Went here for our anniversary after a friend who knows Vienna really well recommended it. Fantastic food and service. They really enjoy talking to you about the menu and your wine options. If it were cheaper, would go all the time!
