The menu is small but a lovely alternative to typical Perigourdine food (not as heavy) and the sturgeon on toast with horseradish is world class. Plenty of parking nearby and a small terrace if you like to eat outside. Recommend booking for parties larger than four as it's a fairly compact place and importantly it's popular with the locals (including the Mayor) as well as the tourists which is nearly always a good sign. Great wines, many of which are regional but no typical beer or spirits last time I checked it's not a wine bar though so if you're after pub grub there are alternatives in Le Bugue. Highly recommended.
We stopped for snack lunch at this friendly looking cafeteria, which turned out not bad, and we expected to pay just for what we had ordered, which was two dishes, but in the end the bill was like for a good diner, we were charged for every extra. I am not saying it was wrong, I just worn the fellow budget travellers.
We were welcomed politely by the jovial, lively owner, who took pride in everything she did. We had the menu, offered in French or English and of mostly regional fare, explained to us, and the specials board, before leaving us to decide. After we had chosen she confirmed what we had ordered. She had a good working knowledge of English not a computer translation! She then suggested which wines would go with what we had ordered. The courses we chose were excellent and very good value, as was the wine. For dessert we chose rum baba, which didn't go short on the rum! It was noticeable that she greeted and gave attention to each couple who arrived. there was a great atmosphere in the room. The place is neither large nor small. inside there are about 4 low tables with dining room sized chairs and there are 5 high tables with bar type chairs. Outside there are another 4 tables, so plenty of choice. We would definitely return here again when we are in the region. Don't go though if you expect piles of chips, coke and burgers it isn't that type of place.
Chai Monique. Title - Charming Wine Bar with Outstanding Regional Cuisine. We dined at Chai Monique three times during our one-week stay in Le Bugue, starting with a lunch that was so good that we came back the same night for dinner. We enjoyed the...More
We booked a table today at about 11.30am today for 11 people and were told to wait until 2-2.30pm for a table. We arrived at 2pm and the waitress told us to wait another 15 minutes. We came back 20 minutes later with very hungry children to be told they could no longer accommodate us because we had children even though the waitress had seen our group earlier. By this time all of the other restaurants were closed. Very disappointing and family unfriendly.
