Had heard alot about this ice cream outlet in IL. Finally went there today. Had expectations that it will beat the likes of BR and Gelato but I would rate it honestly a simple flat 3 out of 5.The reason is simple, i tried their special rainbow cone and did not find it as good as it looked. It was not bad or something not worth trying but it was generally just like other ice cream bara locally made. The take away staff was pleasant and welcoming though. I would just say that from a Desi Perspective, this ice cream is a Go-To nearby type of a place when there is a craving for dessert.
What is it about THE original rainbow cone?! If you haven't tried it, you must have one for yourself. Now there are quite a few locations and I think more on the way, so it makes it easier to satisfy that craving for the multiple layers of flavors that just go perfectly together. Don't be afraid of the size, you can even get a small one! I myself like to share a large one in a Waffle cone... my fave! If there isn't a store near you, they have a ice cream truck that travels to different locales so be sure to keep an eye out!
I've been hearing about this ice cream shop all summer and finally decided to try it last week. I got a small rainbow cone, slightly dubious of how the flavors would fit together. The line was quite slow because scooping ice cream for a rainbow cone is much more laborious than scooping normal ice cream they do it one slab at a time with a tiny shovel scoop. It's also less bang for your buck when you compare a small single flavor to a small rainbow cone, and there was no ice cream inside the actual cone. The two flavors that stood out to me on the cone were pistachio and chocolate (especially as a combo), but again, I wish there was just more ice cream overall. Next time, I'd definitely try the single flavors such as blueberry pie or salted caramel (my friend enjoyed those very much). Also, parking is a bit tight at this location due to the drive thru line.
When I used to attend The Taste of Chicago, I always saved tickets for a rainbow cone at the end of the day. It was a perfect dessert. Every year I swore I'd go to the store during the year. I did it once. So you can just imagine my delight to find the food truck at Buena Beef. And then the Lombard store opened. I've gone two or three times so far, and every time it was busy with families, people on dates, or just groups of people. Tonight was no different. Lots of people in the restaurant and outside in the patio. My son and I got large original rainbow cones. Yum! These flavors shouldn't be good together, but all the different flavors are amazing together. The only warning is that some of the flavors have nuts, but you can always order what you want.
