Still, a perfect place to watch sports especially rugby, the garden extension is a place to eat and watch people. As it was Monday, we ordered the bar special of a pie and a pint, I choice Guinness and steak pie, and my wife 's choice chicken both come with gravy, but if you want veg or Gun Powder Fries its extra. We cannot wait for inside dining to start again as we miss dining at the bar amongst all the African wildlife. Of course, as always, the service was fast and cheerful. TIP: Social distance has caused them to lose half thier dining tables, so weekend visits require a reservation. (562) 421-4590. It was getting close to the end of happy hour and as we were nowhere near our local watering hole, spotted the Eldo bar and though we would take a chance. Not knowing anything about the place we were very pleasantly surprised, for upon entering as it had that warm neighborhood bar feeling. The walls are covered with lots of large TV screens and various Southern African animal heads, ranging from Wildebeest to warthogs, this I thought was not your typical American sports bar. But all became clear when we sat at the bar and Michael the bar tender explained that the owner was from South Africa. There was a fair range of beers on tap which apparently, they change weekly, my adult beverage of choice was the White Rascal, and my wives was the house chardonnay which according to her had a great flavor. As we were going out to dinner later, we just ordered appetizers from the South African influence happy hour menu. Boy what a surprise, the mini sausage rolls came on a very large plate and the taste was outstanding, only thing missing was the Colman’s hot English mustard. As for my wife’s dish, it was all that I could do to stop her ordering more fish tacos they were so good. We checked out the regular menu and there are a great range of south African dish 's, especially real meat pies which are very hard to find outside an English or Irish Pub in California. There was even food for vegetarians, but I am not sure about veggie shepherd’s pie! Will certainly be coming back to try the steak pie served with mashed potatoes, gravy and green peas. What really impressed me was that while sitting at the bar looking at all the spirit bottles, I spotted a bottle of Campari, so ask Michael the bar tender if he could make me a drink called Mistake , (Campari, red vermouth and Prosecco in a large glass) he sure could and even including the large single Ice ball. Cannot recommend this place enough, as the prices are reasonable, and the service is great. TIP: Read the Menu and try something new you might be pleasantly surprised.
Despite being Long Beach natives, and moving back to town 6 years ago, neither my husband or I had ever been to the Eldorado, even when we were kids (FYI it is technically now named The Eldo though the original Eldorado sign that I remember from my childhood is still there . But when a friend 's band was playing there on a Saturday night last fall, we decided to check it out. This is more of a sports bar atmosphere (plus bands there on weekend nights , but the menu is varied. You can get bar food such as wings, but they also have some nicer dinner options (such as filet, rib eye, and lamb chops as well as South African specialties. On that first visit, we all enjoyed our dinners, as well as our friend 's band, and since then, we have gone several times for dinner and the band, as well as for lunch on a couple of occasions. I really enjoy the meat pies (Steak N Stout, Shepherd 's Pie, etc. and the Durban curry. I wouldn 't say that this is the best restaurant ever, but it is definitely better than most sports bars that I have eaten at. The biggest issue in my mind is that it tends to be very noisy I can understand it being loud when it is packed during a big game (such as the NFL Playoffs last weekend or when a band is playing. But the acoustics of the building must be off somehow, because it seems pretty noisy there even when there is no band and it isn 't very busy.
This place claims to have South African origins and influence. Other than some of the decor and a few sprinklings on their menu, this place is nothing more than a bar. My family went here for brunch recently, and made the mistake of going on a Sunday. The place was filled with rowdy young locals who were already drunk at 9:30 in the morning. It took over an hour to get pancakes and sausage. The waitress was also rude and didn't seem to care that our children were starving while she hung out with her friends at the next table. Avoid this place, there are much better eateries in the Long Beach area.
I have had the chance to visit the Eldorado a few times now. It's not much to look at from the outside, but the food is great. They offer a good selection, but their Borewors roll and Braai platter that includes lamb is to die for. For any South African in the LA area this place offers up some great tastes of home including a delicious melk tert. I highly recommend them!
