I guess for a tourist spot like that one could say the prices were average. Apart from the main meals...here, the desserts are also great. Pirker is a famous gingerbread brand in Austria, and it really is THE BEST! So make sure you also stop by the little shop where you can buy tons of gingerbread (Lebkuchen). It is delicious!
Right opposite the Basilika of Mariazell you 'll find a large building with Hotel Goldener Löwe written on it. In the ground- and first floor is the Pirker , a coffee shop and home of Mariazeller Lebzelt (sweet shortbread). The coffee is very good, unfortunately, we went...there twice and got rather old cake, which was very, very expensive (taking its age into consideration). As I said, nice to visit, but be careful what you order.
I was in Lebzelterei on December 17. 2016. at around 11 am. I tried to order and asked a waitress middleaged one for gingerbread and coffee in English. She didn 't understand and repeated something in German. Ok, then I asked for apfelstrudel and coffee and...she brought them to me. Then I was looking for the toilet and I was standing in the middle of the entrance to another hall. The same waitress came from behind I didn 't see her then she pushed !!! me and yelled really, she really yelled at me! at me from behind so that she can pass. After having eaten and drunk the coffee I tried to pay the bill but she ignored me passing by me a lot of times. Finally I succeeded to pay and she didn 't say anything. Nothing. No 'thank you '... So I am still wondering if it was a bad dream because I am a kind person and people are generally kind to me all the Austrians I met are really kind and hospitable people, all other people in Mariazell were very kind the salespersons, everybody. So such a behaviour is really intolerable. Was it because I 'm a woman, a Croat? Was it racism towards ' 'lower Slavic race ' ' or I shouldn 't have appeared there alone? Anyway, my trip was exceptionally good, everything was very good, including food, people, so all the good things prevailed over this incident, but anyhow, I decided to share my experience with TripAdvisor site just in order to prevent such things happen. This is a traditional manufacture of ginger bread. There are guided tours, where you can get an impression of the making of ginger bread (you can actually watch the bakers), wax candles and honey wine. Of course you may try some of the sweets at...the end of the tour. The bakery is part of a confectionery shop and restaurant which is prominently located on the main square right across the basilica.
