My wife and I find ourselves back in wonderful Oaxaca for another winter and one of our first lunches was a return to one of our favorites, Los Quintoniles. The restaurant is in a new and larger space at Armenta y López 814, with new art, furnishings and gaily colored walls. Chef Tavita offers very tasty, attractively presented, healthy, and reasonably priced breakfasts and menús del día, including several vegetarian choices, which change daily. The restaurant is several blocks south of the Zócalo and requires just enough walking to burn off at least a few calories. Both Tavita and her waitress are learning English to accommodate non-Spanish speakers: Tavita can also teach clients some of her native Zapotec. Tavita’s dedication, warmth, and enthusiasm are reflected in her approach to cooking. There are no run-of-the-mill lunches here. We enjoyed a delicate chayote soup, a sautéed chicken breast with chapulines (chilied grasshoppers), and pasta with a chard pesto sauce. The agua was made from chilacayote, a type of melon. We highly recommend getting to know Los Quintoniles and Chef Tavita.
My wife and I winter in Oaxaca City and we enjoy frequent trips to Los Quintoniles for the wonderful and economical “menú del día.” The location is intimate and the service is very personal. The multiple daily offerings vary depending on what’s fresh in the market that morning. The multiple choices for the menú include both vegetarian and meat dishes. We’ve eaten there often enough to confirm the authenticity of the photos posted on the listing. On a recent visit I and took great pleasure in devouring a plate of “Taquitos de Jamaica,” succulent hibiscus blossoms rolled in fresh corn tortillas, deep fried to a golden brown and served with chopped onions and parsley, ripe tomatoes, crème fraiche and crumbled cheese. The food is as delicious as it is beautifully presented. Los Quintoniles is clearly a labor of love.
