This is for new students thinking about buying a meal plan. I'm a senior and have had at least some kind of meal plan every year, continue walking down south campus to go to rams head whenever possible because the people who work there are amazing and the environment is incredible. well worth the walk down to south campus to avoid the daytime lunch crowd at lenoir. Rams head has made me a happier person.
There were so many options during the New Student and Family Orientation session. It's great to know that my daughter will have a lot to choose from. #GoodFoodMatters
UNC's weather and break policies are deeply exploitative and unacceptable. Skyrocketing housing costs in Chapel Hill-Carrboro and incommensurate wages force UNC workers to live farther and farther away from their jobs and pay for long, expensive commutes. UNC does not pay workers during inclement weather or breaks, so when a power outage or weather closing is announced unexpectedly many workers have already spent exorbitant amounts of time and money coming to campus, only to be turned away with no pay. UNC food service workers are also LAID OFF during breaks, meaning they have to find another job or otherwise make ends meet for months at a time during the year. These practices subject workers to permanent financial precarity and hardship: it is unacceptable for UNC to treat its employees this way. UNC subcontracts its food services to Aramark, a private company that is notorious for exploiting and abusing its employees on our campus, including firing workers for learning English on their lunch breaks and for attempting to organize. We know UNC's history: UNC food services were only privatized after Black Lenoir workers, with the support of the Black Student Movement, went on strike and boycotted the dining hall in 1969 to demand better working conditions. Less than a month after workers succeeded in gaining a wage increase, UNC sold off its food services to a private company. Now, the administration can shirk responsibility for the horrendous labor practices its subcontractors use on our campus. The company that runs UNC food services is Aramark, the largest provider of food services to prisons and jails in the world, and one of the largest beneficiaries of the prison industrial complex. Stop exploiting Black and Brown workers!
