I’ve been to Grana 3 times. The first two times were sublime. In fact, we drove 50 miles just to get there. Last night was my birthday dinner, and to say it was not a good experience all the way around is the understatement of the century! We made reservations for 4 people at 4:30 as that was all they had. Our hotel wasn’t ready for us to check in at 4:00, which created a time crunch. I called Grana to let them know we were running 10 minutes late, but our dining companions were probably already there and could be seated. The maitre’d impolitely stated that if we were 15 minutes late, we would forfeit the table despite half of our party already being seated. I admit, I found this perplexing. Are you going to force those seated to leave? Unfortunately, that was only the beginning. Grana makes this ravioli that has a beautiful egg yolk in it and as you slice into it, it opens and the yolk artfully joins the ricotta cheese to create an incredible taste. Sadly, for me this dish also includes truffles, which unfortunately for me are unappealing. So, I ordered this incredible ravioli dish, sans mushrooms, it arrives with shrooms and over cooked yolks that weren’t moving. I hate to be that person that returns things, but in this dish the yolk is the star and well. I quite literally waited all year for this meal. I politely show the server the hardened yolks and ask for another, once again without mushrooms. She takes the plate away and states she’ll have it remade. The rest of the table was enjoying their food, I waited. When my replacement entree arrived, the yolk was cooked perfectly, but the brown butter sauce still contained those pesky offensive shrooms. When I notified the server of the server mushroom offense, she grabbed a menu, told me those are absolutely not mushrooms, their “truffles”. Speechless, I inform her that, in fact truffles are mushrooms, she states, “well they’re in the mushroom family”. At this point, I’d already returned their initial attempt and well, everyone had already finished their entrees so, I scraped off those truffles and forced it down despite hating that shroom taste. I’m so disappointed. In a restaurant that has a chef that obviously takes pride in his food, it’s appalling that his staff is going to destroy his business. Perhaps they’re tired after a profitable summer season, but they need to remember they need the Fall and winter people too. We will not return.
