La Boucherie - Saint-Laurent-des-Vignes

As we were staying 2 miles outside of Bergerac we decided to find a more local restaurant to our hotel. Although it was still a couple of minutes drive we decided to try after reading several reviews where the steaks received some praise. Well the first night we walked in and received a nice welcome and a young lad came across to our table and was most helpful with our limited French even getting us menus in English. We both ordered steak and frites and wine. The wine arrived promptly and the food a short while after. The wine was OK and the steak was passable, a bit on the chewy side but cut up small it was edible. We both had a desert which was thoroughly enjoyable. As the meal had been reasonable and the service good we decided to go back for our second night. Different staff this night, two ladies, no real welcome and told there is no English menu. After we explained we had one the previous evening “et voila” two miraculously appeared. As we had enjoyed the wine the previous night we decided to have the same so showed the receipt from the night before. We were shown a bottle which was not the same as previous but were told this was the one. Unfortunately it was not and neither was it enjoyable. Again we decided to have steak, and what a Miss Steak it was. Both steaks were almost inedible, even cut into small pieces it was almost impossible to digest. The frites were OK luckily. Completely put off after this and paid, not bothering with a desert on this occasion. Certainly would not recommend for a steak.

This chain restaurant is like a modern cafeteria but with high prices for that type ,of ambience. The food, however, is quite good (especially if you are a beef lover! . We found the highly coloured and illustrated menu cards difficult to decipher a plain card listing the dishes and their prices would have been better. Service was very friendly and efficient, and the food was nicely presented. OK, if a bit expensive, for lunch. For us, not a place to go for dinner.

If you like plastic picture menus showing you the plastic food to come, and are happy to pay high prices for it, then this place is for you. Indifferent meat in horrible gloopy sauces, all in a fake American Diner pastiche. We really hated this place. Maybe others will see it differently. One of us had an upset stomach afterwards, but we can't be sure what the cause was... maybe a coincidence. But the staff were very friendly and smiley.

Staff were friendly and spoke English. Food was served promptly and was of a good standard. The place was well run and good for families.

Quality used to be quite ok. Now it is one big mess what is served. Entree consists of almost frozen Lentilles and tasteless salmon. Rose served in pichet, form Herault Region is worse than worse. `Sommelier` should do some homework or deserves to be deported to a place far, far away. Tasteless burgers with some unnamed fat yellow sauce. HOW DARE A RESTAURANT SERVE THIS KIND OF SH*T FOOD. A TRUE DISGRACE.
