I ate at the U S restaurant in the 1980s a great deal, before several moves to the current location. Sadly, it just is not what it used to be. The service was fine, though I suppose there is no replacing the old waitresses you used to have. But I ordered the same thing I used to order the veal and it just wasn't up to the old standard. Sorry to say.
We enjoyed our meal at the U.S. restaurant. We were in between lunch and dinner so it was quiet and we were seated by the open window so we could enjoy the world going by. Being vegan, it is always a challenge finding a tasty option but they had a few to choose from. I ordered the Spaghetti Trapanese which was chopped tomatoes, basil, garlic and toasted sliced almonds. With a drizzle of their in house pepper oil, it was very tasty. Others had the table had the Osso Bucco with polenta (looked wonderful! , Linguini Vongole (although the clams were small, there seemed to be quite a few of them and the Cabucio Caprese with a caeser salad. Because of the time we were there, the service was attentive and easy giving us time to enjoy our time there without being rushed. Other vegan choices were Penne Arrabiata, Spaghetti Marinara, Bruschetta and in addition to the traditional desserts, they had a lemon or blood orange sorbet.
We had a nice meal. It was a quiet Sunday night. We were not in a hurry and really enjoyed this neighborhood spot. The Bruschetta appetizer was fantastic. Our pastas were all really good. The special Strawberry cake dessert was incredible. Good food, good people, and the ambiance of North Beach makes for a good time.
They had me at housemade gnocchi. The bolognese was just like my Nonni's. Great service. Really enjoyed our meal.
