I must confess to not have been here for a while and can't believe what I've been missing. Good food, lovely staff and great ambience. Now my go to place to eat in Stur.
This weekend four of us had dinner at Bank House Brasserie in Sturminster Newton. We spent a few minutes looking at the extensive menu of Tapas and failing to decide, so ordered any four different Tapas and left the choice up to the friendly and efficient staff. These could be a starter before a main course, or we could order more. The first round saw us sharing a Whole Baked Brie, Tempura Vegetables, Oriental Duck Croquettes, and Pan-Fried Prawns. They were delicious. The Brie runny enough to soak the sourdough toast, the Tempura crispy outside yet fresh within, the duck matched with hoisin sauce, and the prawns good and garlicy. The Brie was large enough to last through our decision to ask for four different Tapas. For the second round we were served Slow Roasted Pork Belly, Chorizo in red wine, Bubble and Squeak Rosti, and a Patatas Bravas. As we finished these we all looked at each other with the unspoken question, ‘Shall we have another round?’. It was answered as soon as we caught the waitresses’ attention. Round three delivered Bank House barbecue Chicken Wings, Creamy Spinach Gratin, Classic Ratatouille and Chicken Rillette. The staff did ask us about any dietary preferences before serving us, but as a table of omnivores we were happy to try whatever came along. We left the choice of these twelve different dishes entirely up to the staff, and we were glad we did. There were elements that I would never have chosen myself but ate with gusto when they arrived. A hugely varied and enjoyable meal and a great way to eat together. Though none of the dishes disappointed we did each have a favourite, and they were all different! I highly recommend the food and the informal atmosphere of the Brasserie, possibly the most enjoyable use of one of the increasing numbers of empty bank buildings on our high streets.
