Kanto sweets lovers are likely familiar with the work of patissier Hal Okada, even if they don’t immediately recognize the name. He’s the creator of the sublimely delicious, 100% vegan sweets on offer at Wired Bonbon, Iyemon Salon, Trueberry, and Futaba Fruits Parlor. Last year, he opened his own little shop in Hiroo. We went to check it out. The shop is tiny, and located on a side street off the main road. When we walked in, we were pleasantly surprised to see Okada-san himself, putting the finishing touches on a cake in the open kitchen. You can pre-order whole cakes, or just take home a few slices. We went with slices of the mont blanc cake. At 780 yen per slice, it’s not exactly cheap, but not unreasonable either, especially for something of such quality. This cake was FANTASTIC, with yummy chunks of chestnut and a slightly coconutty crust. YUM! If you’re looking for a vegan cake to make your special event even more special, you can’t do wrong with the incredible creations available at Hal Okada Vegan Sweets Lab.
The owner of this cake business had a load in kamakura many years ago. we drove from tokio to kamakura to visit its loading! it was so good. we were sad when the load closed, but so pleased to see that it was restored in hiroo, tokio. I love that the cakes are gluten-free and do not contain white sugar. all cakes taste like their non-vegans equivalents. it is creepy how the owner created such a debt-free and cruel cake! updated by previous review on 2022-03-05
Herr okada who runs this load is responsible for the vegan sweetnesses for many other shops around tokio, including futaba fruits parlor and wired bonbon lumine shinjuku. I was a fan of his cake since an earlier load he ran into kamakura. I visited on a late Saturday afternoon and they had four kinds of cake slices for sale: strawberry vegan sponge cake, cheesecake, premium montblanc and royal chocolate cake. since the payment will be cashless from juni, the staff told me that they can pay with suica if they have no credit card. they start online with ordering with the delivery for whole cake (together with the online order for picking up in the load they already had). I chose discs of the first two options and they were nice as anything he does. they have more choices for ordering whole cake including strawberry chocolate sponge cake and strawberry smile sponge cake, which looks great for children. they focus on a good quality and I thought the price was very fair for what they get. I think the discs started each at 660 yen. the personal is very friendly and the owner was very passionate about vegan desserts. updated by previous review on 2021-05-23
The cake is delicious, a bit expensive though. I had the mon blanc and strawberry shortcake and was not at all disappointed. There is no seating area and you need to make a reservation if you want to buy a full cake. The location is a bit hard to find cause its in an alley.
Seriously the best cake I’ve ever had. Idk how they do it, but I’m blown away. They also do pre-orders of cakes too!
