What a beautiful location of the merrior lies. next to a commercial oyster farm, on the shore of the rappahannock river. they have the opportunity to eat in the interior or on the grass where tables are scattered everywhere. Unfortunately, eating was a disappointment. I ordered the oyster Po’ boy. it arrived in time, but there were only four fried oysters on a bed of shiny and pickles on a butter hotdog back. definitiw no oyster Po’ boy. maybe a oyster role. they have calculated $15 for the four fried oysters on a bungalow. for dessert there was a Matcha-Green-Tee-Panna-Citta that caught my eye. what arrived was a green, with strawberry covered, gel-like mass. it was not edible. apparently, the cook has replaced the milk component with cocos milk to be “healthy and vegan”. that was not a panna-citta through any stretch of imagination. when they decide to go there, they avoid the oyster po’ young and matcha panna cotta. the burgers got good.
Like other reviewers, I have visited Merrior many times over the years, and loved the food, the view, the service…everything. Today we brought family members who had never been to Merrior, and we were excited to share the experience with them. After lunch, they remarked that we had paid a lot for a little. Sadly, I found myself agreeing with them. The oyster po’ boys we had were tasty but skimpy. In an ironic twist, when we arrived, we watched hundreds of oysters being processed on the nearby dock. It seems like a couple more oysters on the sandwiches would not break the bank. And I missed the metal trays of the past, and wasn’t sure why all the food is served on flimsy paper. I used to think the wine prices were reasonable, but not anymore. While the view was, as always, spectacular, and the oysters fresh and wonderful, I am sorry to say I am not sure I will return.
Loved everything. Best oysters I have had in a long time, did not get shrimp this time but next time, Homemade Choc Cake ? River Location, Beer/ Wine selection, Dog friendly and a park like setting.
It was unfortunate that during our recent visit to Merrior the service poor and the food was alright, but nothing like we have had in the past there. We have been there many times over the years and always looked forward to going back, but I am not sure we would return. We started with the ceviche and the menu said it was made with flounder, scallop, shrimp and avocado. Not sure what happened to the avacodo because we definitely did have any of it in our ceviche. The shrimp were small and the bay scallops were fishy. The portion came in this tiny bowl and was not worth the $14 they were charging for it. The oysters we ordered were good, but you can't do much wrong with oysters on the half shell. The steamed shrimp were the highlight of our menu selection. We had to flag down our sesrver multiple times to get more water and drinnks and then again to get our bill. They definitely need additional help on weekends to handle the visitors.
