Contribuisci feedbackI decided to visit G. Kelly to try an authentic British dish, as it came highly recommended by various blogs and reviews. It took us about an hour to travel from Notting Hill, and the directions on the tfl app were not entirely accurate - the walk ended up being closer to 15-20 minutes rather than the stated 10. Unfortunately, as someone with an Asian palate, I found the vegan pie and mash to be quite bland. I couldn't quite pinpoint what was missing, but it lacked flavor. Adding the chilli vinegar mix available at the tables helped slightly, but not enough. The beef pie may be a better option. The mash could also use more butter. The stewed eels were served as 5-6 small pieces swimming in a warm parsley liqueur/gravy. They were okay, but had a slight fishy taste that may not appeal to everyone. Overall, the food was affordable, except for the eels, but I don't see myself returning. It's worth noting that the area around the restaurant feels more authentic and gritty compared to the high streets of central London. While I didn't feel unsafe walking around, I wouldn't necessarily venture out alone at night as a non-local.
This restaurant is known for its traditional East End dishes such as pies and mash, and jellied eels. It's a long-standing and well-respected establishment that offers a true taste of London. I'm not certain if they offer pale ale on their menu, but it's definitely worth a visit for a quintessential London dining experience.
A few years ago, there were two branches of G Kelly's, one in Bethnal Green and one on Roman Road. I finally visited G Kelly's because I was dining at Randolfi's next door. Despite being full, I tried their jellied eels and liquor. Fortunately, I found their pie mash again in Stevenage at The Cornish Pantry, where they also provide a spoon along with a knife and fork. The pie had a chewy pastry filled with rich, dark, coarsely minced beef. It was on the salty side, as was the liquor, which had a pleasant hint of eel flavor. Overall, I was glad to have tried it.
Have been coming here for years. Traditional East End market fare. Simple, tasty, reasonably priced food. Friendly staff.
Went today the only issue that I seen was , people was helping themself to there own cutlery. That metal tin which was on top of the counter you don't know no if people have washed their hands or blow their nose .but they are helping themselves to the cutlery . This is a Big Issue for hygiene very disappointing and very disgusting Nobody knows who clean some one hands are
