Coming here and not ordering peking duck just doesn't make any sense. From presentation to the flavor and texture, it is beyond any other peking duck I've ever had. They even smoke a portion right at the table and it is unforgettable. Their other menu offerings are also great but a little over priced. Very professional staff.
We had ordered the Peking style duck in advance. It was perfect for the four of us. Duck was very good and the presentation was very well done. For dessert we split a Blue Pear. It was a delicious, light dessert and ideal since all of us only wanted a bite of something.
Worst experience ever in LA area. We are from Bay Area and come to LA regularly for good food. We won’t consider revisiting this place due to its unprofessional service. To be fair, the food is very good, despite being super overpriced. However the biggest problem is our waitress. We came as 2 adults and 2 kids. The waitress kept encouraging us to order more dishes by saying the portion of the dish is not that big, and of course she only recommended the more expensive ones. We ended up with finishing only half of what we ordered. Our friends dined there a few days later and had the exact same experience: no problem with the quality of the food, but definitely hate the over-prescription of the dishes.I read about the similar experience from other users too. Seems like this is a pattern. Somehow the waiter/waitress are not operating like they want to keep the restaurant open for years. Personally I won’t revisit this place due to unethical practices and I will tell my friends not to.
The duck is probably the only dish that is worth a try although interior staging really gives you the feeling of a high end restaurant. Other than that, you can probably get the same quality of food at a much cheaper price in most Chinese restaurants, even in Irvine. Smoked duck meat is really special and the best dish of all. The reason I gave two stars for the service was mainly because the waiter kept telling us that what we ordered was not enough for everyone and pushed us to order more. In the end, we couldn't finish all. Also, one of the veggie dishes he recommended was actually soup. But we already had one soup for everyone, why would we need more soup? It's something he could remind us beforehand. I don't mind paying a mandatory 20% tip but the service is really not on par with what it is charged. For around $80/person, I think there are many more better places in the area.
Finally, a Chinese restaurant that's at par with the finer establishments in China. For authentic Chinese fine dining(palace style food), no other place in SoCal could match Chang'an. The Peking Duck is exquisite need to order ahead of time. Exotic appetizers like the cordyseps is a brave dish to serve in the Orange County and one can only hope there are enough audience for such interesting texture and taste. The modern interior decor is elegant and subdued. Service is top notch. There are too many good things to say about the food so just go try it. For those that are into price comparison the only reasonable way would be to compare it to French/Italian fine dining.
