I've had hainanese chicken before and prefer it at room temperature as opposed to cold. The sauce that accompanied it was not very exciting as well. The chicken and potato curry lacked salt. The roti was flaky and crispy but the gravy was just okay with the consistency of water - not a gravy. The atmosphere is plain and service is good - even though there is not much communication between waiter and customer being that you fill out your own order sheet. In my opinion, there are better places for Malaysian food in the city - Kaya Malay and even Hawkers is tastier.
Living in Kits, i never knew there was a hainanese chicken and rice shop so close to me. The food is outstanding, with very pleasant staff! I recommend to visit earlier during the day as they can get quite busy!
We had an excellent supper. 3 different dishes all of which registered high on the yum - meter. Hainan chicken laksa curry soup, curry tofu egg rice, and nasi lemak ... tasty fare at reasonable prices. The roti canai is a unique dish worth a try. Will return.
I have been going to Mamalee since my university days a number of years ago. This restaurant is located on West Broadway on the far west side of the town nearing UBC. I remember they started from a small shop near Macdonald Road to moving to the current slightly bigger venue. The quality of food has not been changed. Every time we go they never disappoint, from the infamous Hainanese chicken rice to the rotti to the laksa noodles. All of them had its unique taste. Of course their chicken stands amongst every other dish they serve. The two chilli sauce each offers a bit of their own spiciness. The chicken is extremely tender and matched perfectly with their in house sauce. I would recommend ordering the half chicken (or whole if you wish) to go with a bowl of rice as a la carte as you are most likely going to crave for more after just an normal regular dish. The restaurant might be hard to find but there are often plenty of parking spot so if you decide to park somewhere nearby and search for it on foot then it should be much easier.
Love the food at Mama Lee's - it's quick, tasty and very reasonable price-wise. Big fan of the Hainanese chicken and the laksa noodle soup. It's a great little neighbourhood joint run by nice people - wish there were more places like it around. The only problem with it is that it's very small and very popular, so there's usually a wait for a table at peak dining hours.
