Rare find! Sankofa is a must-visit for the best in the latest books, nicely curated talks, impressive rare books, and friendly customers. The cafe offers smoothies, lattes, vegan options, breakfast, bakery items, and Wi-Fi. The book collection includes one of the largest selections of children's books, rare books, film, art, sci-fi, health, spirituality, biographies, history, music, and more from across the African diaspora. It is one of the few long-standing black-owned businesses that remain on Georgia Ave. The front patio is a nice place to spend a warm day with a book or a friend.
This is without a doubt the most unique restaurant/cafe I have ever visited. It also doubles as a bookstore and, it appears, may host spoken word events, although none were taking place during my visit. Upon entering, the establishment exudes African American history and love. They offer a variety of items for sale that represent African American culture, such as books and flags. While the menu may not be extensive, they do offer a diverse selection of food items, including vegan options. I opted for the chicken croissant sandwich, which turned out to be the best croissant sandwich I have ever tasted. The chicken was incredibly well seasoned, prompting me to exclaim that whoever made it really knew what they were doing. The only downside was that there was only one person working, resulting in a wait for our food. However, the meal was so delicious that it was well worth it.
I recently enjoyed a delicious, satisfying, and nutritious dish at this restaurant. The dish is called Ful and consists of black beans, onions, tomatoes, and a blend of secret spices. After eating, I felt energized and revitalized, as if I had just consumed a powerful dose of vitamins. I highly recommend trying the Ful if you visit this restaurant. I usually like to take a picture of my food before digging in, but the dish was so irresistible that I completely forgot to snap a photo.
The restaurant offers a great selection of African history books and videos for purchase, alongside delicious food. Fans of the movie Sankofa will especially appreciate the cafe, as it allows them to immerse themselves in the cultural history depicted in the film. Overall, we had a fantastic time and highly recommend it for those interested in African history and cuisine.
