I've been coming here since 2006 when it opened. Have loved it through two owners and a pandemic. It has had its various incarnations, and the current team is lovely. You have to know the neighborhood to know the context. (a) They are very friendly with Call Your Mother across the street, and both businesses know they help each other... what another poster said here was incorrect. (b) This team is great, but understand that they can get slammed. When you walk in when it may be quiet, but it might have been hopping 30 minutes earlier. That's why they can run out of things... it is hard to anticipate the ebb and flow. Best to just come with a flexible mind and heart. (c) If you have five-star love to share, put it here. But if you had a problem, tell the owners, not the internet. They'll take care of you... they have always taken care of the rest of us, and for a while I had a hard time paying for a coffee here because they were so determined to make a very minor slip-up right. We love them all so much we ran two fundraisers during the pandemic to make sure the counter staff got some around the holidays because the tip scene got so bad. Famous neighbors donated, university folks gave, and everyone from the delivery people to students at the girls' school up the street made sure to take care of the counter staff (this was a fundraiser for baristas, not the store itself... the owner said he would not take money personally). So now when you come you may expect big things because of all my hype, but it's just a coffee shop. To the outside, untrained eye it probably won't seem like a big deal at all. But to our little neighborhood it is a warm heartbeat in a place where the personal touch can seem lacking. Georgetown landlords love to raise the rent, so businesses come and go. Saxbys has hung in here for (as of 2022) 16 years and counting. I look forward to celebrating its 20th anniversary and beyond.
This is a friendly little corner coffee shop that has been open since 2006. Before that it was Sugar's Campus Store, and that version went back to 1917. I believe before *that* it was a pharmacy. Coffee and food are basic, but it is owned by a true Hoya alumnus who knows Georgetown very well. His young family is growing, so he's not on-site as much these days, but a great manager and capable team keep it moving. Be careful when there is a line out the door, because it might mean shortages and waits. I prefer to go when it's quieter, so if I see a line then I go to Compass Coffee (under the neon Georgetown sign on Wisconsin Avenue at the end of O, just short stroll away), Janti Cafe across from Safeway, or the Starbucks at 34th and M. But if there isn't a line then I do like to hang out here with my coffee and laptop. Breakfast sandwiches are good choices, as are most of the grilled cheese options.
Nice atmosphere, very inviting and we didn't have to wait at all when we went in. I haven't been to DC in a few years so I was happy to have this experience, keep up the good work.
Delicious grilled cheese! Good iced latte. Needs better ventilation inside (smokey from food cooking).
