I'd love to give a review on the food, but I sat at a table in an empty restaurant for 15 minutes, finally had someone bring me a menu, had my server...
As far as airport food goes, the prime rib sandwich was pretty good. Stopped by the Red Rocket for a quick bite before my flight and honestly, I had a very different experience versus to what others have written. The service was very polite and quick, pricing is decent for airport food. Portion is decent sized. The sandwich is fresh and filled with yummy prime rib. The dip sauce it came with was phenomenal and really made it all come together. Fries were somewhat forgettable, definitely room for improvement there. I was in and out within 30 minutes and I didn't even ask to rush the service to make it to my flight. No issues paying. I'd definitely come back.
Red Rockets diner is surprisingly decent considering that there are limited options at Pearson Terminal 1 for US flights. I followed the advice from Kris' previous review and ordered the Deep Fried Chicken Salad. Not much has changed in the past 4 years except that the bonus ketchup flavours were now back to basics. Deep Fried Chicken Salad came on top of a bed of spinach brussel sprouts with bacon and white wine glaze. The fried chicken had an extra crunchy batter which was a little burnt yet tasted delicious. The chunks of meat were still fairly tender not dry. The portion was quite filling with all of the cooked veggies and bacon bits. This dish tended to be on the salty side but the white wine glaze gave the dish a bold savoury taste with a slight sweetness and acidity. Service was friendly and easygoing. On TV at the bar happened to be one of the best Wimbledon tennis matches of all-time. Federer Djokovic were going at it up to 12-12 in the deciding set, and I ended up staying at Red Rockets for about 2 hours prior to my flight. Enough time to notice some neat potlights with TTC streetcar inspired engine rods here too.
I don't understand what this restaurant is doing in the airport. The food is actually disgusting the service couldn't be worse. Is it because they serve drinks? Is that what we've come to? I had an early flight out of Toronto on a Sunday morning and of course I never found time to get breakfast. There weren't any coffee shops open at the time, so I decided to give Red Rockets a try by grabbing some coffee and breakfast. Because I didn't feel like being pampered by a waitress at 6 am, I went up to the counter and ordered myself. I picked up the breakfast special for $14.00 which consisted of scrambled eggs, potatoes, bacon, peameal bacon, and toast. I also ordered a coffee and a marble loaf. For some miraculous reason, the waitstaff did not let us sit by the window, because apparently those who chose self-serve have to sit elsewhere. Not the best thing to hear when you're half-awake at 6:00 am. The food took 30 minutes to come, which is a ridiculous amount of time for a simple breakfast. Oh, and my coffee? Yeah, it was completely forgotten about and I had to remind the waitress 20 minutes in. Our breakfast also came in a takeout box when we were clearly sitting inside the restaurant and dining in. Zero logic! The food itself was repulsive. There was a layer of oil at the bottom of the takeout box and the food practically swam in grease. Yuck! This was the worst breakfast I've had in years!
