The dinner for 2 was tasty and delicious- just the right portion size. Service was friendly and fast. Parking can be a bit of a challenge. Be back.
My family and I have been coming here for dinner for several years now. They are generally super busy on Friday and weekend nights. The quality of food and reasonable prices makes this place very popular.<br/ <br/ We came on a weekday evening and the restaurant was consistently 70% full throughout our stay. I like Huang Pu River because they have some very authentic Sichuan food and Cantonese Food dishes. Many of my favorite dishes from both styles of cooking can be found here. They also have a lunch buffet that is pretty reasonable, but with so much selection nearby, I wouldn't go out of my way to come here for that.<br/ <br/ The only fault of this restaurant is the service. It's just that there simply isn't enough wait staff out front to cope and this is pretty consistent amongst my experiences coming here. The strange thing is, the backside of the house seems to keep up no problem. So as long as you're not in a rush, this place is worth a try.<br/ <br/ The food here is genuinely good and the portion sizes are large so they offer exceptional value. They also offer a complementary dessert which is extremely rare nowadays.
This place is great! My mom brought my boyfriend and I here for dinner and the food was fantastic! The portions are huge and definitely worth the money! We will definitely coming back here!
Near the University of Manitoba, Asian restaurants (Chinese, Japanese, and S. Korean) are popping up everywhere due to the high number of international students in the area. A couple weeks ago, my friend invited me, for the second time, to Huang Pu River restaurant (1875 Pembina Highway) where you can order a dish of Spicy Fish with bean sprouts or noodles the size of your head!
Service can be slow but trust me, it's worth the wait (and it's not always slow either, hit and miss basically). Favourite dishes include the green beans with ground pork (ask for them to make it spicy if you like things hot, it's amazing), Cantonese chow mein, and possibly the best approximation of Oceana Chicken since that restaurant closed, hot honey chicken (it's moderately spicy as is, but again, they'll make it hotter if you ask). The shrimp dishes (salt and pepper, sweet and sour, etc) use large, succulent shrimps, and the breaded fish in ginger sauce is crispy and fresh.<br/ <br/ The restaurant is clean and comfortable, and the prices very reasonable. Also, if you're placing a small takeout order (2-3 dishes), they usually get it done very quickly, like 20 minutes max if you're ordering pre/post dinner rush, and 30 at dinner time.
