It's mainly the dark atmosphere that doesn't make me to come more often, with it's rather posh look. I think I have to come again to make myself clear about its rating. One must agree though, that the food presentation is beautiful! But other than the look of the restaurant and the food I think the food could be comparable to other thai places so here you will mainly pay extra for the look. Service was pleasant and timing was about right My friend loves this restaurant though and especially their LUNCH DEAL for £9.95. I don't deal well with too spicy dishes and I haven't been lucky so far to get something just right for me. Lets see if I will come back and it will change my mind :
We do like Thai food personally I cannot stand spicy but you can easily find something nice and not spicy to eat. We went to Sabai for the first time this past weekend, to meet friends etc. We've booked our table for 2000 and indeed the table was ready and we were sat immediately upon our arrival. The place was packed! When the whole party arrived, we had to wait for at least 10 15 minutes for our orders to be taken. And this is when it all started. One of the coctails did not make it to our table at all cannot remember if we were charged for it...After the starters the waitress took all our plates etc. and within 10 minutes she brought the bill and the warm napkins. Yes! As you can imagine, the main course did not make it to the table either. OK I understand that Aberdeen is going through a rough time, but come on we do have some money to spend on a Saturday night dinner!! When the misunderstanding/confusion was cleared up, we had to wait an extra 30 minutes for our food to arrive so we were waiting for our food for more than an hour...And they did not even say sorry, they did not even give us a free drink, they did not even blink their eyes...If it was only me and my partner I would not have left a tip...but hey ho! All in all the experience was OK the food was delicious but the fact that we had to wait for so long, made me think that I might not go there soon...
First thing that will strike you about Sabai is the crazy neon lightshow and weird plasma screens covering the walls. Now these screens weren't showing the evening footy but displaying Windows style screens saver moving graphics cira 1997 style. Yes it was like being on acid, whilst trying to concentrate on eating the spiciest red curry I've ever consumed. Good job I like my chillies and I don't suffer from acid trip flashbacks, or this could have turned out to be the night from hell. Have to say food was rather tasty, but the portions were a little small considering the massively expensive prices £4 for a side of rice, you gotta be having a laugh). I know Aberdeen restaurants are pricey but this does take the biscuit. One thing I usually don't complain about is slow service, but it was pretty slow on the night and the waiter did forget about us on a couple of occasions. Would defo pop in for the wacky light and graphic show but it may may be cheaper to buy some illegal hallucinogens for the same effect.
I ate here in April 2013 while in Aberdeen. We were recommended Sabai Thai by the hotel concierge. The restaurant is very nice, downtown location, works well as a romantic dinner or a large group dinner. The food was fantastic very tasty Thai! Had some great vegetarian and seafood options! Reasonably priced would recommend.
Great service and food but the atmosphere makes me feel like i've been in Alice in Wonderland tripping on acid. There are bubble walls with changing lights and the ceiling has changing LED's too.
