Shortly after placing orders, the waitress looked at the waitor and giggled the word' ANGLAIS' when referring to us to the waiter with a smirk. The word simply means Englishman/English people. I got the impression it was a little condescending and not in the context of 'let's roll out the red carpet for the English King and Queen have arrived'. I heard the word Anglis (pronounced Englese) once again shortly after the waitress asked if we wanted desserts to which we told her we were quite full and might walk around first and she repeated what we said to her colleague with the word ANGLAIS again! I still haven't figured out whether I was judged because she thought I was being cheap by not eating dessert or because I am an ANGLAIS and don't know how to eat properly (dessert with every meal) like a Frenchman! Staff should 1. Be given a linguistics tutorial and learn that English people are not the only people that speak English (US, Australia,Canada) 2. While Sherlock Holmes was a fictional detective, real life customers can understand their not-so-secret mockery!
I had a nice pizza on the covered and enclosed terrace for lunch. The service was not prompt, but ok. Menu selection was not large, but the hamburger that a neighbor had looked delicious. The request for the cheque went unanswered for a long time, for me and for others as well, so finally I went to the bar inside to settle the bill. The location is at the end of the Cours Mirabeau, so they get a lot of the day tourist business and therefore probably do not anticipate many return customers.Still, the food was good and at a price that was just at the upper limit of correct.
Sunday is a quiet day in Aix-en-Provence and a good day to do the Musée Granet. Afterwards I recommend the cafe Le Terminus. Bustling and friendly with a mostly young crowd and located at the top end of the Cour Mirabeau, it has a daily blackboard menu. I chose grilled lamb chops with cèpes mushroom cream sauce followed by a tart tatin. Both were very good and reasonable in price. Friendly staff and a typical bôite atmosphere. Recommended.
Food and decent prices. Nice location. waitor did the dishes in English and helped us choose a meal. The negative? shortly after placing orders, the waitress looked at the server and laughed at the word "ANGLAIS" by referring to the server with a narquois smile. the word simply means English/English. I had the impression that it was a bit condescending and not in the context of "Let's go back to the red carpet because the king and the queen of angleterre arrived." I once again heard the word Anglic (pronounced inglese) shortly after the waitress asked us if we wanted desserts to which we told her that we were rehearsed enough and that we could be first coworkers. I still didn't understand if I was tried because she thought I was cheap by not eating dessert or because I'm an Englishman and I don't know how to eat properly (dessert at each meal) as a French! Staff are very hostile to foreigners. We asked for a glass of wine at 11.50 a.m. and the lady told us that they were no longer serving drinks, because they had to prepare the tables for lunch. I said 20 minutes for us, it was more than enough, but she said no. And then, surprise, surprise, the French gentleman who was sitting next to us asked for beer and nothing else, and the lady served him with beer without a doubt. Very nice attitude towards tourists.
