El Gallego - Algeciras

A superb typical Spanish bar that not only offers a free tapa with every beer or wine purchased, the food served is very fresh and tasty. The tapas bar offers a massive unusual selection and is very reasonable. The staff are efficient and friendly. The restaurant menu is great, if you can manage to drag yourself away from the tapas! If you are in the area this is a place you must visit!

With a very simple and unassuming ambience, the restaurant is located along a crowded highway in the not very tourist-oriented city of Algeciras in Andalusia. Our visit was on a weekday night in July 2016. The place looked to be a favorite for local patrons, therefore we didn 't expect any special treats but .... what a surprise!!! This restaurant alone is worth a visit to the area. As tapas-appetizers we ate pulpo à la gallega and garlic clams: they were super-fresh and delicious. As entrées, our teenage son got the entrecôte steak, which he claims is the best steak he 's had while in Spain. My husband and I got the day 's special: grilled rodaballo (brill fish , that was absolutely heavenly!!!!! The fish was extremely fresh; it was cooked à la plancha and cleaned and served at the table with a side of broiled vegetables. As dessert, we opted for a super yummy chocolate soufflé, filled with hot chocolate and accompanied by vanilla ice cream. The service was attentive and discreet, just the way we like it. This is one meal we 'll never forget :
