This will have to be kind of a small review for now. I came here for a wine dinner and got the fixed menu that came with it. The food was excellent, with the frog legs being the best I've ever had. Until I come for a non-event meal, I'll just be a fan. I used to come here a lot in the 90's are early 00's. It wasn't kept up to snuff, and it's work to get to, so it went off the list. However, I had some great meals in the day. I remember being here after a day of Alta powder falling with friends that were visiting from Cologne Germany. The view up the mountain as the groomers were starting, the fresh snow, excellent food, and the porcupine working his way across the road as we watched from a table at the front window was perfect. I look forward to another perfect meal. This was a great reintroduction to the restaurant. Since it was a special evening, only the front room was opened. That gave me time to talk with the current owner. They've created a wonderfully comfortable space. The menu is small, but covers a number of areas I want to try when I come back. So, until then, all I can say is give it a try. It doesn't appear to have gotten a lot of local love, and it deserves it.
I was so disappointed. I had been looking forward to enjoining a really special dinner at Shallow Shaft. I'd been before. This time, my food came with a big hair in it. I was discreet and whispered about it to the servers so that other diners wouldn't hear. But the response from the servers was poor at best. Both servers who were taking care of us seemed put out when I wanted to swap that plate out for a replacement. One even asked if I wanted the same plate back once the hair was removed. I ended up losing my appetite and not wanting a replacement. They took the item off our bill, but did it begrudgingly. The senior person, perhaps a manager or owner, did come over and apologized, but still our party left unhappy and don't expect to return.
Amazing food. Way overpriced but no complaints, it's a really nice annual splurge. Service is always prompt and professional, and the experience and environment is really unique.
I get that there aren 't many restaurants in Snowbird/Alta, but I don 't get the glowing reviews for Shallow Shaft. Biggest complaint was the high-altitude pricing. $78 for a filet with a little crab on top? (And without stating the price of the special . The service was a little aloof and didn 't wow us with professionalism.
