Have dined here on many occasions, however will not be returning as a recent data breach on their system almost cost me £1,500 through a fraud telephone scam. Huge amounts of stress, thankfully the bank were able to reverse the payments. When I called to speak to the restaurant the individual I spoke to seemed completely unbothered and assured me that emails had been sent to the people who may have been affected, not good enough for me I'm afraid as I never got the email. Gilbey's needs to treat customer data with more care and if they're aware of a breach and a scam, surely it would be a priority to let people know who may be affected. Exceedingly disappointing.
Had our third visit to Gilbeys and found it to be very expensive for the quality of food we received. Had to choose from a £52 set menu with surcharges for sides and steak taking it to £65 or thereabouts for steak and one side. The steak was of poor standard considering they charged extra for this, I was expecting a lovely cut of meat. Two of us had the steak and both were of the same poor quality. The set menu wasn't great for choice either with very limited selection. The room was lovely and the service was excellent from our waitress. Overall cost was £90 a head for 8 with not a lot of alcohol ordered and 3 people weren't drinking alcohol. We have decided that this will be our last visit to Gilbeys.
We had an evening meal here and were shocked at the final bill.the menu is definitely overpriced. The starter and main course were nice enough but we ordered the cheese plate to finish not noticing that it cost a princely sum of £14.50! For that we got 3 small pieces of cheese still cold from the fridge and a few crackers and a small pot of pickle Very disappointing!
A wonderful dining experience. A party of 12 of us had a separate small room upstairs. We were there for a Sunday lunch and I think all of us had a traditional roast some had beef, some had pork. I had the beef and it was very nice (as long as you don't mind the meat very rare! (I did notice that the portions, particularly of roast potatoes, was inconsistent around the table but I did not test to see if they would have brought more on request . I started with the fishcake which was lovely but others around the table had other options which all looked delicious. My neighbour particularly enjoyed the soup. For dessert I had the lemon tart with blackcurrant sorbet which was a beautiful combination I particularly liked the crunchy caramelised topping on the tart. The two young ladies who served us were both great. Polite, pleasant and efficient. Nothing was too much bother and the orders taken and delivered (without a too long wait accurately. Although quite a tight squeeze (I wouldn't want more than 12 in that room , it was a comfortable and well decorated room which added to the overall experience at Gilbey's. Don't go for a separate room, though, if any of your party are not good with stairs! Well done, Gilbey's, I bet we'll be back!
