Disappointing. Ordered a burger to be cooked medium/well. Burger was charred black on outside and blood red in the middle. It took a long time for server to come back to our table...and, at that point, I didn't really feel like eating. So, I asked server to have the kitchen correct my order and make it to go. I made an attempt to eat my to-go burger the next day and same thing...charred black on the outside skin, blood red throughout. My wife ordered the shrimp scampi. Another disappointment. 4 shrimp on olive oil covered pasta.Last time we're eating here
We arrived without reservations on a busy Friday night and a friendly, professional staff took good care of us. The swordfish and steak were exquisite — even the smallest roasted baby potatoes were memorable for their flavor. The atmosphere is loud and open…informal, as steakhouses go. We’d definitely return.
We have been to Smythe Dove twice, but last nights experience was so sub par, it warranted a review. APPS: We got the mussels and the pretzel bites. The mussels were shoved tightly into a bowl that didn't allow for the even distribution of sauce. They were stacked way too high and should have been dancing with the juice. That said, they were enjoyable and tasty. rating: 4/5 for taste. 2/5 for presentation. The pretzel bits were just fine. They didn't blow me away. 2.5/5. DINNER: First of all, I expect any high(er) end steak house to know that burgers need to rest before being plated. This is cooking 101. Otherwise, the customer gets a soggy, sloppy hunk of meat that doesn't stay together, which is exactly what happened last night. I ended up eat just the patty as everything else had fallen apart. I think I could've gotten a better burger at Applesbees frankly. Taste was there, except the eating experience was a mess. The truffle fries were stuffed with some sort of wilted leafy green. WHY?! Do you think it looks good? It looked a mess to me, and most certainly added nothing to the flavor. Do less. 2 out of 5 on my meal. My husband ordered the strip with demi glaze and whipped potatoes. The demi glaze was wayyyyy too tomatoey. Yuck. The whipped potatoes were lumpy and lacked flavor. 2 out of 5 for me, particularly given the price. ALL IN ALL: I'd rather take my $200 elsewhere. I had so much hope for this place. The outside is awesome. The inside ambiance is a bit odd (loud music downstairs, no real cohesive dinning theme, weird art work), but something I could have ignored for good food. I could see us coming back for a drink and an app, but nothing more. Would rather spend a little extra and go to ruth's chris or capital grille. OR spend LESS money at grassfields. Sorry, this is a miss for me.
It’s just a no, don’t go. In spite of hearing horrible reviews for years, we finally decided it was time to give it a try. It’s the last time. Maybe if you never dine out and have zero expectations this place could fool you, but if you have any expectations, you will be disappointed. I don’t even know where I could throw in a compliment…it was horrible. The filet was on par with Applebees, the Demi glaze was so horrendous….I do feel bad for them as they are clearly not doing well, but until they need to make some SERIOUS changes. The menu is awful and the food couldn’t be worse. Nice space and I look forward to going when new owners take over. Waste all around.
