Great way to end the week ... Friday treats at Soul! Southern inspired seasonal food, lovely patio, great staff, friendly service, outstanding beverage selections ... (shhhh no tourists!!
Fried Pickles I love fried pickles! They fry pickle spears, which still kept the pickle crunchy which I loved. They also had fried olives?!?! I never had those until then and now I have a new addiction. The crunch of the breading was perfect. The Cajun aioli was the perfect combination. Perfect amount of spice that wasn't over powering. This was my favorite dish! Arugula Salad Nice thick pieces of pork belly. Needed more dressing on the arugula. The cornbread croutons set the salad off. Crispy yet soft at the same time. I am not a fan of overly hard croutons, these were perfect. Salmon Vieux Carre The Brussel sprouts were the star of this dish. Great char, perfect amount of hot honey and roasted perfectly. The salmon was over cooked and dry. Almost like they reheated it or something? I had to smother it in the Cajun aioli to make it palatable. The blackened seasoning was not as flavorful as I am accustomed to (I've been to Naw'lins and the blackened there was not replicated here at Soul). Southern BLT I did not eat this, not a tomato fan. I tried the bread though. I was impressed with the ciabatta. It was fresh and soft, with a nice crunch. Same Cajun aioli, so I imagine it was a tasty sandwich. My buddy said it was good. I would recommend Soul, even though it didn't get Feed My Soul Status.
I almost stopped myself from writing this review for fear of overcrowding this hidden gem. Tucked away in a quaint shopping plaza is definitely an element of surprise. From the moment you walk in, you 're greeted by the bartender who always flashes a quick smile while managing to continue to serve his patrons, without missing a beat. If you asked to be seated, you 'll pass is patrons and turn to your right for an intimate dining experience like no other. If you pause for a moment, you will even notice soulful ballads sung by all the jazz greats and Motown 's own playing at the perfect toe-tapping decibel. Within minutes of being seated, you 're typically greeted with a pleasant server but if you 're lucky, the bar tender will pitch in and show up to your delight. No matter who calls on your table, you have to start off with the sweet tea. The subtle notes of peach transport me to the south every time. If you decide to order a real drink, you can 't go wrong with anything on the menu. Now when it comes to starters, the fried green tomatoes and spicy chicken bites (sans the pickles) are my fave. From the first bite, you get the impression that someone 's grandma is in the back frying up pure joy! But judging by the way the plate and the small bites, I would say that it 's not grandma. It 's probably her grandson or granddaughter. Definitely a young chef, but one that honors traditions and legacy. When you 're ready for an entrée, the shrimp and grits are amazing. Let 's take a commercial break to honor the grits. These aren 't your average runny grits. These are stone ground Georgia grits, so if you don 't like 'em thick go to a diner because this place has Soul. Now back to our regularly scheduled programming Seriously, if you up for the jambalaya, you will quickly realize that it 's not anyone 's grandma in the kitchen, someone 's grandma was either raised in New Orleans or the chef has Creole DNA . If you don 't believe me, order the beignets. Do yourself a favor, dine in, order takeout, bring a date, date yourself or do whatever it takes until you try everything on the menu. Like I said, this little gem has Soul and they never disappoint!
Definitely a unique spin on soul food, I lucked up finding this place when my regular Sunday breakfast spot was closed. I ate the shrimp and grits and it was pretty tasty. Nice people working and cooking in there.
