Main courses all contained meat with the exception of Octopus; so on request the Maitre’d assured us the chef could provide an alternative. The starter of Moules Gratinee was good, the Aubergine with Anchovy less so, the anchovy mostly not detectable. The main course of Monkfish (without the chorizo sauce) arrived, to our surprise and alarm, skinned, with its skeleton intact including the head, looking as if tortured! On request the fish was removed to the kitchen and filleted, but our shock remained. The fillets were plain and unadorned with the promised alternative sauce, a morsel offered to our dog was refused. The other main course of braised beef in wine sauce was charred outside and dry, the flavour not enhanced by a pile of sour onions; only the dauphinois potatoes helped the palate alongside a bottle of local rouge. We declined dessert, my favourite chocolate pot no longer on the menu. We paid and left feeling we were being unreasonable. We afterwards researched the serving of Monkfish and nowhere was it recommended with the skeleton head, a notable chef we contacted also confirmed this.
I was passing by and saw that on sundays they offer Couscous for lunch. So I got in made a reservation and the next sunday had a wonderful lunch.
Visited 30th Aug for dinner. Nice place, very clean and welcoming. I started with the moules which were excellent but pricey at €13. Mains were tuna and steak. The tuna was well cooked but, as with a lot of fish dishes, not hot enough. The accompanying vegetables were sparse but tasty. The waitress offered to change the dish but it was too late. You only have one chance at a first impression. My wife had the ‘piece du boucher’;given the dish, the butcher mustn’t have been very competent or well trained! The meat was sinewy and tough. Once again they were willing to change it but too late! Lovely bread and an excellent bottle of Mas Christine. However ther was no wine by the pichet as advertised on their website. My Wife’s mousse au choc was lovely. Staff were attentive, kept social distancing and hygiene regs we’re adhered to.
We stayed in Argelès to break our journey from southern Spain, and decided to eat here. First impressions were really good,as we entered a conservatory with a wonderful wisteria and were met and seated promptly. However, things soon went wrong. We were given a drinks menu to choose an aperitif, and waited 15 minutes to make an order. Our meal order was taken at the same time. We waited, and we waited. 40 minutes after taking the order, we were told that the food was coming in 10 minutes. When I said that this was not acceptable, I was told that it would be 2 minutes, and it was brought immediately. I asked for a reason for the delay, and was told that our order had gone astray. There was no apology for the delay, and my suggestion that a reduction would be in order was refused. My dish of Sarsuela was good. However, my wife's was very poor indeed. She had chosen a dish of tandoori flavoured chicken brochettes served with gambas in a Thai sauce. The Thai sauce was a green slime which tasted of nothing, and instead of the expected fragrant rice, it was served with roast potatoes, carrots and broccoli! We refused dessert or coffee, paid and left, cutting our losses. My biggest complaint here is how they dealt with the fact that our order had gone astray. Things go wrong sometimes everywhere. The test is how you deal with it. This test was failed.
