There is no need to pretend they mimic something else when they are already a tasty dish on their own. Unfortunately, ordering the vegan crab cake removes all other vegan appetizer options as it is served with two other appetizers on a plate. While they do offer vegan dessert, it is disappointing that they do not have any vegan bread in their bread service or offer a salad that can be served as a vegan option. Additionally, there are several menu items that could easily be made vegan but are not.
I have visited Gertrude's a few times and have tried their vegan appetizers, entrees, and desserts. Unfortunately, I was not impressed with the food. The vegan sweet potato gratin lacked seasoning and was too sweet. The house-made vegan burrata-style cheese was not at all like burrata and tasted more like gritty cashew cheese. Although the vegan desserts are usually good, the watermelon mojito sorbet was overwhelmed by peppermint extract. One dish, a stuffed tomato, tasted like it had been sitting out for too long. Despite this, Gertrude's is a good option for dining with omnivore friends or loved ones, as they offer a variety of vegetarian and vegan options along with menu items for meat and seafood eaters. They also have a good selection of beverages. It's worth noting that the zucchini crab cakes were outstanding, but the vegan vegetable curry was lacking in flavor.
My fiancé and I wanted to have a special dinner the night before our wedding, so we made a reservation at Gertrude's. It can be challenging to find vegan options at upscale restaurants, but we were pleasantly surprised by the variety at Gertrude's. We tried the vegan crab cakes made from zucchini and were blown away by the flavor and perfect cooking. The portion size was just right. In addition to the vegan crab cakes, there were other vegan and vegetarian entree options available. The restaurant also offers a selection of labeled vegan desserts, including housemade sorbet (with the exception of one flavor made with honey). The Almond Pear sorbet was delicious. The apple beignets were also a standout dish. The wine selection was diverse, and we enjoyed the half off wine special on Wednesdays. The staff was friendly and our server was knowledgeable about the menu and our dietary needs. They even left a thoughtful note on our dessert plate congratulating us on our upcoming wedding. The atmosphere at Gertrude's is lovely, with great ambiance, music, and art. The ongoing renovations did not detract from our experience. While the restaurant is on the pricier side, ordering the vegan options made it more affordable and the overall cost was reasonable. We highly recommend Gertrude's for a romantic, inviting, and relaxing dining experience.
I didn 't know this place had vegan options until the local Vegan Drinks group had an event here. I was pleasantly surprised by how awesome the vegan options were! Food: 9. I had vegan soup, crab cakes (made with zucchini), and an apple dumpling with ice cream. All were delicious, especially the crab cakes and dumpling. Price: 7. Its pricey enough to be a special occasion only restaurant for me but isn 't terrible in regards to a nice restaurant. Atmosphere: 8. We got to sit in the sculpture garden! Pretty and relaxing atmosphere in general. Staff: 8. Nothing partucular to say about them.
