But next greeted with, So you want to eat here? oddball comment was uncomfortable...maybe bc we arrived 40 mins before the PM close for dinner service?? With all tables seemingly clear and clean, we were asked to hold up while the waiter wiped down the table...such a strange beginning, but service picked up as the clock ticked on. Tomo has a clean, mod interior with lime green and large bamboo screening the walls and a display of sake bottles filling another. Salmon lunch entree $9 yielded tiny portions barely 3oz for price, nice char on the smaller piece and choice of miso or salad. $12 Lunch Bento 's salmon came medium well done with a slightly larger piece but an additional $2 add on each for miso or salad? Whaaa, it 's bento?! 3/5) Pork ramen noodles had good texture but again just past al dente and house broth more 5-spice Chinese than Japanese shoyu or tonkatsu. Egg was solid chalky yellow on arrival, so in all not quite hitting it but edibly 3/5. $10 with lots of noodles and large piece of chopped up char sui compared to PDX skinny servings. Used a local hotel travel mag BOGO roll coupon 1 per table) for 2 hamachi cuke green onion rolls regularly $9 ea, and was the best of our choices. Beautiful rarely used cast iron Japanese teapot with too hot to handle, matching metal teacups served the two Genmai brown roasted rice bagged tea for 2, tea service $3). Competition rules, and for execution and value, a different table calls when next in Bend.
Nice place, not real big. No loud music. A few craft beers on draft. Large sake selection. Edamame: comes unshelled. Not bad but sort of bland. Ramen, pork belly. This is a solid example of a tonkotsu ramen. Best in Bend? I don 't know I 'm still researching but the competition seems limited. Noodles cooked well, tasty ingredients, a perfectly done soft boiled egg and moderately rich if non spicy broth. This is not the heart attack inducing broth found in the best bowls of ramen but it 's damned good. The only detractor is the charshu (sliced pork). I found it to be overly thick and a bit tough. You can get the ramen with chicken if you prefer. I 'd like to see a spicy version of the tonkotsu. Nigiri: ordered three varieties. You get two per order which is nice. Fish was fresh tasting and nicely cut. The rice was a bit loose and tended to fall apart too easily. The chef (I believe it was the chef) explained to our table that they use real wasabi and high end soy in preparing the sushi. I didn 't taste much wasabi or soy and they don 't provide the usual dollop of green horseradish 'wasabi ' to help kick it up (it came with the sushi rolls, however). Plus, there 's grocery store soy on the table, not high end stuff. Nevertheless, this is very good sushi. They could work on their presentation the sushi looked like it was plated by someone in a hurry and some people place a lot of value on that (i.e., people that are not me). Sushi Rolls: we ordered three half rolls. Tasty, not a huge serving. Service was friendly, polite but quite uneven. Our sake order was forgotten until we reminded her of it (actually, we had to flag down another server to relay the message). The ramen came out well before the sushi, leaving two of our three without food on the table for a few minutes and letting my ramen cool down. My beer glass was almost empty after the sushi was delivered yet there was no offer to refill (servers need to notice things like that) and finally, just as the check was delivered we inadvertently spilled quite a bit of sake on the table. That should prompt the server to get a towel to assist in cleanup but it was ignored. On the plus side, the server was very helpful in assisting with the choice of sake. Located in a drab strip mall next to the Southside Pub. Parking is easy, unless the pub is packed. Recommended.
We 've had mixed emotions with TOMO over the years but it was never their quality of food or great flavors that made us waiver. It 's their odd hours and closing on random days where I had no idea until I drove all the way across town to see a closed note which was annoying. This hasn 't thankfully happened in awhile as I 'm very cautious to make sure they 're open before I make the trip. I would say they 're the best value for sushi in Bend. That being said they aren 't overly or underly priced but they make some great sushi for the money. I 've never had a roll, sashimi, nigiri, or appetizer I wasn 't happy with. Make sure they 're open and check them out!
Hands down some of the best sushi I've ever had. It's that diamond in the rough. Never had a bad dish, The staff is friendly and helpful. The chefs are amazing hands down some of the best people I've ever met. The quality of the food is phenomenal. Regardless of the situation when you walk in well worth the wait and always greeted with a smile. Well done tomo!!
Overall very polite and friendly staff, everything is clean, their lychee sake is very yummy, and it is difficult to not admire their bamboo wall. The sashimi is fresh, I did not partake in the seared salmon nigiri, but my parents who were with me said it was delicious; everything was also very nicely plated. It was a great experience and recommend it to anyone craving some sushi!
