Contribuisci feedbackThis restaurant offers both indoor and outdoor dining options. It operates as a self-serve establishment, requiring customers to collect their own utensils and dishes. When we visited around 1 pm, we were informed that kababs were not available and so we opted for chicken karahi, chicken biryani, and naan. The food arrived at our table within 10 minutes, and the portion sizes were satisfactory. While the biryani tasted more like pulao than traditional biryani, the karahi was average but fresh. The highlight of the meal was the freshly made, warm naan. The prices are affordable, which contributes to the restaurant's continued operation, however, improving the hygiene of the dining area could attract more customers. The restaurant appears dirty and neglected, with no attention paid to decor or ambiance. Despite being located near UC Berkeley where students may not prioritize ambiance, the restaurant has the potential to attract more customers if improvements are made in certain areas.
I had a pleasant meal, but unfortunately, the restaurant did not pay attention to my additional instructions. Many times, I have requested utensils, but my order was consistently delivered without them. It was frustrating not to have the proper tools to eat my meal.
I was pretty disappointed with my experience at this restaurant. I arrived for an early lunch and it was completely empty. I decided to order the biryani, but was disappointed to find that the rice seemed old and stale, possibly being a day or two old. The texture was hard and clumpy. While the meat was tasty and tender, the overwhelming amount of rice made it difficult to fully enjoy the dish. Additionally, the seasoning was lacking in flavor depth, with only a hint of spiciness but lacking any complexity from other spices or herbs. The charred onions on top also seemed to be lacking in flavor and tasted old as well.
I was walking past with my dear wondering where we should eat, and we decided to enter this unassuming house. We were greeted by nostalgic ambience which reminded me of the humble places I used to eat at when I was little. We were greeted with amazing hospitality, and it truly felt like we were guests and not just customers. Between the generous and accessible portions (not to mention delicious), and the perfect (and free) chai, I felt compelled to write my first ever Yelp review. Thanks for making my day.
Cheese-stuffed naan, great free chai, and the best Chicken Tikka Masala I've ever had, what's not to love! House of Curries was a staple of mine when I was in college and I'm happy to report that they are still delivering excellent quality food to this day. Do I only ever order Chicken Tikka Masala, the whitest Indian dish there is? Undoubtedly. But why deviate when it's just that good? My wife and I have tried to find an Indian restaurant we like here in San Jose but we still haven't found one because we always compare it to House of Curries and leave disappointed. I also haven't found another place that makes cheese-stuffed naan, which is an absolutely amazing accompaniment to any dish. At the end of the day, House of Curries delivers a killer meal for a great price, and what more could you ask for in a college town? Do yourself a favor and stop in to enjoy some excellent food and great service.
