Happy to see this kind of shops!I love Berlin, it is veggie and vegan friendly everywhere!Vegan meat only, made by them, Vegan cheese, vegan food!It looks like a delicatessen but actually you can sit and eat, not much space, but still. They have a restaurant in another area, items just the concept store. The opening times were confused, only written in German, but the employee told her they will think about putting a sign in English so that we could understand. We tried their burgers and currywurst, they were tasty and fabulous! Soup was creamy and hot, just great to eat in this cold weather. We paid 18,50€ for dinner and some cheese which was very good too.
I rarely write a review that is more focused on the product, instead of the local, service and overall experience. This then will be the first exception to my book of reviews.I will however do my best not to disappoint in most of the relative factors. The Vegetarian Butcher aka Der Vegetarische Metzger. What do we even make of this title when first time reading or hearing? What do we feel?To be honest and fair, I had my doubts and they were plenty.Meat that is not made of meat?!Anyone remember the film “The Wing or the Thigh” with Louis de Funès?Well you have search engines to your disposal. Many things come to mind, but probably none of the imaginable is even close to accurate when confronted with the experience.Fortunately I was able to participate in a tasting of nearly all products served and was also able to make some photos of the whole shindig (uploaded here).Where to start?!The best part I guess. The chicken filet.Tender, tastes like the real thing (“happy chicken”), juicy and unbelievably so, even crunchy with the sense there is that delicious part of skin.It took a while for my mind to process the fact that I was not eating chicken and quite honestly, I’m not sure I’m there just yet.It is truly my favourite product so far!The tuna fish on the bread.Fantastic and so damn close to the same viscosity as the real thing. On cracker or small piece of bread, add half a cherry tomato, some basil and your good.Beef Burger. While I didn’t taste the patty separately, as a burger I was truly satisfied.A double Burger is though what I would prefer, but that’s just me.Or a double cheeseburger, which they also have on the menu. The chickenburger was again excellent! And I am not only referring to the meatless meat, but the whole package. The Crispy Chicken Burger.Blows your mind! The Chicken Wrap.Just like a fresh and tasty chicken wrap. The liver pâté.I can’t eat liver, but I can eat this one. That makes me very happy! The potatoes and sweet potatoes are real, so the only thing I can say is that they taste great and are prepared perfectly. All the dips taste great as well. The Curry Wurst / Bratwurst.Basically a sausage German style.Since there are so many different types of this sausage on the market, it would be almost careless to state “it’s like the real thing”, because the real thing isn’t based on many standards. It tastes like a great sausage and that’s the end of it!The cold cuts. This is the only thing where the viscosity and elasticity is not like the real thing.Having said that, its damn close. The taste is great as well and I enjoyed eating it.There are more products like the beef stripes, the shrimps, spring rolls, sausage rolls, bacon cubes and so on and so on.And I will try them all out soon, meaning an update is coming soon.So what is the principal?Who is the clientele? Why get into the trouble?I eat meat, I eat fish, I eat a lot of things. While too often I eat what morally clashes with my conscience, I do eat it because I like it to much to stay away from it.And honestly I don’t want to get into a debate about the morals of the food industry, because I don’t have my muse sitting next to me at the moment.I miss the times however where meat and fish was rare and expensive, while vegetables were not only cheaper, but real, tasty and healthy. But times have changed and the food industry has changed our lives dramatically.Today it’s all about getting the highest amount of calories a buck can give you.The food revolution (how I like to call it) gives us another chance to reinvent ourselves and lead a healthier life. Many have tried and failed. But this is the course of nature of every success story! We fail until we succeed! In my opinion, The Vegetarian Butcher is a success story in the early stage of writing. You don’t have to be a vegetarian to go there. You can be a vegetarian or a vegan and you will find things you can enjoy to the fullest.Imagine a table of friends consisting of meat eaters, vegetarians and vegans, eating the same things and none of them feeling weird, out of place, judged or craving for meat! Now that’s a social paradise.A few words to the locale it self. It’s clean, it looks nice and trendy, you can sit inside and with good weather also outside. The staff is polite, the smile is for free and the prices are very down to earth, making this place affordable. What else is there?Well whatever that may be, it will follow soon…
Have you ever tried veggie meat? If so - forget it. This veggie meat is better than real meat. Currywurst has been awarded as No. 3 from 50 regular Currywursts. My favorit is the chicken. Bürgers are good as well. No soi , no additives by the way.
