It hides in the fish mong area of the central market place (le halles centrales) it is called L 'écaillerie . This is the place for oysters, seashells and any kind of wonderful products from the Bay of Biscay and beyond. A bottle of chilled white, a feast of shellfish and here you go, in no time you turn into an authentic Basque enjoying life as they know how to do it in this remote area of the world. Hemingway was right, he haunted the Basque country for this very motive. The food is outstanding with a fast depletion (best guarantee of freshness) and the staff is friendly and relentless; especially the squad of pretty girls who combine a welcoming smile with an efficient service. No to be missed!
In the Biarritz market (Halles) 6 oysters and a glass of wine 7.5 euros , wonderful ! This is what eating in France is all about . Lots of other seafood option here . Not to be missed
We wandered around the market halls and into the fish hall and saw the constant queue at this establishment ! We thought why not and were very happy we did ! You can order and eat at the counter which makes it a bit cramped for others, or take upstairs or even outside or back home/hotel, your choice ? Little Anglais, so pointing gestures but we had the Oysters 1/2 doz plus a glass of White/Blanc for 6.90 Euros ! Went upstairs enjoyed as the crowd ebbed flowed, a Good Find Great Fresh Oysters !!
Le Halles Market is open every day a MUST DO in Biarritz – L’Ecaillerie for Oysters, Crab Snails Pelota, the best Ever. Fine de Claire Oysters are my absolute favorite. Also try Izarra a liquor drink which is very “Green” but traditional Basque...
These people have got it going! A great selection of fresh seafood for take away of eating Moules (Mussels) right at their bar. They speak a little English and you can basically point and show want you want. They are smiling and happy to serve you. What a great experience! Go early because the Halles get PACKED with local shoppers. They close early too around 1:30pm (13:30) Highly recommended!!!
