I'm curious if this type of cuisine is authentic to Chinese households, as most Chinese restaurants in Australia seem to serve the same dishes. It would be nice to see more fresh vegetables and delicious meats like the ones featured on food shows.
The Hot Wok is a typical Chinese restaurant found in any small town. The food is reminiscent of the Chinese cuisine I remember from 40 years ago - simple dishes like fried rice and chicken balls that are decent but nothing extraordinary. Don't expect any modern fusion dishes here. If you're traveling along the east coast of Queensland, check out our non-profit blog at havecarryonwilltravel.com for recommendations. The restaurant only offers takeout, so don't plan on dining in. The staff member at the counter is friendly and engaging, particularly eager to chat about Canada. He alone makes the visit worthwhile.
Nice food, reasonably priced, home delivery for a fee, but Peter is excellent. Might not ring up to order for months but he knows who I am.
This was the worst meal of our 3-week tour through Australia. Didn't make us sick - but was otherwise unappetizing. Seemed like the kitchen just threw frozen veggies into a pre-prepared sauce and warmed it up. Prawns in the prawn dish were minimal. Still regret eating here three months later, and wish we would have just grabbed pizza.
We tried the Peking duck in sweet chilli plum sauce, honey chicken and sweet, sour pork and fried rice. The Peking duck was basically a skeleton with barely any meat. The small amount of sauce found at the bottom of the container did nothing to flavour what little meat was there. Hot Wok's honey chicken and sweet and sour pork consisted of somewhat large pieces however these were mostly a thick layer of batter with a very small portion of dry chicken/pork inside. The sauces were nice, but more over the food would have been appreciated. To their credit we did like their fried rice. All in all it was not worth the money we paid for it.
