The Dog and Gun pub does not permitting dogs on the premises. It would be helpful if this policy were communicated on a sign outside the pub to prevent any embarrassment. Additionally, there was a strong smell of fish in the establishment.
Booking, com should take Leeming Wells off their website as this promotes the Dog Gun where breakfast is served for residents next door. The pub was overcrowded with no seats, and the most appalling bar manager I have ever come across. He challenged my vegetarian option for breakfast. He said that this option was not available as vegetarian sausages were disgusting . The dining area was a 1960 's throwback with dated decor and not to mention the bright lights that flooded out the poorly laid tables. Food was disgraceful with a vegetarian lasagne that resembled a bowl of vegetables with dried-up cheese containing no pasta I had to send back my starter due to the poor consistency of a watery sauce with a few floating prawns. The attitude of the staff for sending it back was not nice, I felt threatened. My husbands mixed grill was 'fatty ' and looked like defrosted meat. On a positive side the pub was warm, the ale was excellent and it had a nice roaring fire. Let 's just say we skipped breakfast and did one. Some you win some you lose.
The battered fish goujons with minted pea purée and chips were excellent. The service from the waitress, along with the assistance of the landlord's grandchildren, was top-notch. The granddaughter especially stood out with her impressive rapport and confidence, showing potential to run the front of house in the future.
The food at the Dog and Gun is superior to many other country pubs we have visited. The regular menu offers a variety of dishes, along with four or five special starters and main courses. Tuesday night is steak night, but there are also options for pescatarians and vegetarians, which includes a complimentary bottle of wine per couple. The food is consistently of high quality and presented beautifully in a gastropub style. The ingredients are exceptional, demonstrating a great deal of creativity and care put into the menu selections. In terms of value, considering the quality of the food, the Dog and Gun offers great value. However, the standout for us was the outstanding service from the front of house team. We always received a warm welcome and efficient service. One of us had special dietary requirements, and Hetty was particularly helpful in recommending suitable dishes, showcasing a deep knowledge of the menu and ingredients. The kitchen team was also accommodating in adjusting dishes to fit our needs. Overall, we were thoroughly impressed with the Dog and Gun and highly recommend it as a must-visit spot in the area.
