I used to visit the old Fish Kitchen frequently everytime I 'm up in Brisbane/Annerley, and had fond and happy memory of meals that I had in the past from this place. Unfortunately, gone were the good old days where one could dine in and ordered delicious, hearty meals from Fish Kitchen. Now in its place, we have a very commercialised, take-away shop, serving ordinary take-away meals. The menu has reduced, and many delicious dishes are no longer offered. This place has now turned into just a corner, suburbia fish and chip take away shop, no difference from any of your local fish and chip shops, but probably at a higher price than what you could get in your local suburbs. Not recommended.
I typically refrain from criticism, but this was likely the worst $80 I have ever spent on fish and chips for two people. While the staff were excellent and the menu appeared promising, the quality of the cooking was abysmal.
The locals used to love this restaurant for its unique menu featuring fish priced by fillet rather than weight. However, upon reopening, we were disappointed to find that they no longer offer tap water, have a limited and boring menu (featuring only standard fish and chips and burgers), and do not offer table service, instead serving everything as takeaway. The prices are exorbitant, with coral trout priced at $100 per kilo and other fish at $53.75 per kilo. The restaurant claims these changes were made in response to COVID, but our table was dirty and we did not see any cleaning being done. It's best to take your business elsewhere to a place that respects and values their customers and the local community.
I went to this restaurant for lunch on a Friday and was very impressed with the menu. We both ordered the special, which was the battered cod, chips, and mushy peas called 'the governor'. It was great value for money, with a crispy, delicious batter and tender fish. The portion size was generous. It was complemented by a lovely glass of Riesling, which was the perfect accompaniment. There is seating available both inside and outside, as well as the option for takeout. This restaurant is definitely more than just a traditional fish and chip shop.
I have never had Calamari cooked so woefully in my life and I have had a pretty long life. It was inedible! Husbands fish was at least edible, however, it had very little flavour. I didn't think there would be a day that I would leave chips uneaten but I was proven wrong. The salads looked lovely but unfortunately that is where the good news ends. This is not a cheap fish and chip shop and should be able to do better and obviously can going by other reviews. Hopefully it was just a one off bad day and we just happened to walk in the door on that day. If you look at my other reviews you will see I am very rarely harsh, I try to find positives in most places. Unfortunately, they were a bit hard to find on this visit.
