Raj Mahal - Bristol, City of

Pretty dissapointing byriani. It was simply pilau rice with three lumps of large dry chicken. Not worth the money charged. The sauce was overflavoured with what tasted like half a jar of shop bought curry paste.

We used to love this restaurant and we were excited about visiting now it’s had the revamp. Sadly we found it to be soulless. It was very bright, no music and felt like sitting in a factory. No ambience at all. I ordered the Rezala which is a curry I frequently eat but this one was nothing like I had ever had before. It was so hot it was inedible. Raj said this was because they couldn’t estimate how hot the chilli will be? Instead of replacing my curry, he brought a bowl of curry sauce and suggested I mix it in with mine to cool it down? My curry was cold by this point so it turned into a gloopy, cold mess. No refund was offered for this dish either. We won’t be returning.

Lovely, spacious restaurant, brilliant service and great food! Manager came to speak with us, which was a lovely touch. Staff couldn't have been more helpful and the food was absolutely delicious.... so much so I took a doggy bag home with me!

Raj Mahal was one of my favourite Bristol eateries but my birthday visit was a mixed experience. The restaurant has been revamped and, as a result, has lost its intimate and distinctly Indian feel. The decor is now smart, plush, slick, upmarket ish and soulless totally devoid of personaliity, character and ambience. The staff were pleasant and made us feel welcome but the service was slow. To be fair, there were 11 of us and they did seem to be short staffed but the restaurant was by no means full and we waited 40 minutes for our order. It proved worth waiting for, when it arrived, as everything was delicious and a cut above the Indian cuisine I've sampled elsewhere. The rest of the family concurred with my opinion. There was also a mix up at the end with the bill, which put a dampener on the celebration, even though this was eventually sorted. I still love the menu and the meals there but it might be a while before I revisit.

Lovely, spacious restaurant. Friendly staff, excellent service. We all chose a different main course. The food was lovely, tasty and presented nicely. Very good price. Would definitely recommend.
