The tavern burger is one of the best cheeseburgers I’ve ever had.Narrow in its flavor profile—relatively light on salt, with no pickle chips for tartness or tomato slice for sweetness—this burger focuses almost exclusively on what makes a cheeseburger satisfying. With a perfectly seared, generous helping of fresh savory beef laden with warm gooey melted cheese atop a bed of sharp raw onions, within a buttery toasted bun, that classic bread-butter-meat combo is everything here, with subtle notes of peppercorn making it just a that much better. That warm, crumbly, gooey texture makes each bite a tongue massage. And the fries are cut like pickle chips—the ideal shape, just ask Roll ‘n’ Roaster—and perfectly crisp. Pretty much flawless if you ask me.
The burger was everything we expected and more. Our group of three all agreed it was the best burger any of us has ever tasted.
Make sure to mention that Action sent you! I decided to check out this restaurant during my trip to NYC after seeing Action Bronson rave about their burgers, and it definitely lived up to the hype! If, like me, you’ve never tried a dry-aged burger before, this is a fantastic place to start. We really indulged in red meat and also ordered the tartare, which was enhanced by the salty, crunchy potato strings. The croquettes were fantastic as well!
The burger is truly the highlight of this place. It's one of my all-time favorites and certainly ranks among the best in the city, offering a wonderfully juicy and flavorful experience without any pretentiousness. Treat yourself and add bacon; it really enhances the burger. The quality of preparation and execution is impeccable, and the same goes for the rest of the menu. The cozy, unpretentious pub atmosphere really elevates the whole experience for me.
This tavern in Red Hook is not the easiest to reach. You could use the bus or ferry, and I showed up on a Saturday afternoon for lunch a bit later than I planned. I ordered their signature burger and was told it'd be a while. It took roughly fifty minutes until I got my lunch.I ate the fries and meat with enthusiasm. The meat was full of flavor and the grilled onions below gave it a great deal of kick. Overall the food was great. But you need to plan ahead to get here before you actually are hungry.
