Fabulous place with an old school feeling and awesome classic Hungarian dishes. Schnitzel was the best, definitely not dry. Underground location will be cozy in winter. The staff were friendly and dishes fair prices. A 13.5% service fee is charged which is a bit high, but at least the staff were lovely. Would rather than than grumpy staff. The only thing missing was a little background music. We will be back!
Very good local food with no tourists and, from what we can tell from our experience, authentic flavors.
I hesitate to give '1 's for fear that people won 't take them seriously, but you decide. I was served poor quality food, and deliberately overcharged. I went to the restaurant at 12:00 for lunch, having been recommended it for Hungarian food by a hostel staff member. The waiter spoke good enough English to help me with the menu, and explain the meals. I asked what the main course 'came with ' and he said 'fried potatoes, mashed potatoes ', or another type. I also asked about croquettes, which I wanted to try, and he said 'no '. I then asked about veg, and he gave 2 options. I teach TEFL IELTS English so I clarified 'these are included '... he said 'yes '. The liquid of the soup I ordered (bean and knuckle was lukewarm and cold in parts. The beans and knuckle pieces were cold, which would have been bearable if there was any real taste to the liquid. Just before finishing that, my main dish arrived, and I was disappointed that it arrived early, and also to see french fries, as I was expecting the fried potatoes, (which the waiter recommended , and I had in mind the ones in the pictures on the reviews, or German style fried potatoes, but these were at least hot. The chicken kiev type main meal I had was close to being over cooked on the outside, and the inside was warm, and the cheese was not melted sufficiently signs that this had been pre cooked and heated up in a fryer at high temperature. (I also cook for my own restaurant, and know processes. It was meant to be stuffed with hot sausage, which I neither saw nor tasted any evidence of, and like the soup, the meal was tasteless. The 'veg ' was 2 slices of dry cucumber (clearly leftover from being sliced the day before and not covered properly in the fridge one dry slice of pepper, and 2 small pieces of red onion. The bill came, and I paid, then checked and asked what the additional payment was for... he said the potatoes. I said you said they came with the meal, and the waiter looking at me, grinned, and stepping away said 'small English ' and he scuttled off to the kitchen. Do I argue (by this time there were more locals in or write a review? Back at the hostel I related this tale to the person who recommended the place, and she was most apoligetic she only ever goes there with Hungarians and said that the meal comes with potatoes (but not veg and being foreign, and not being with Hungarians, I was, typically it seems locally, ripped off. Had the food had been even half decent and I 'd have been ripped off I wouldn 't have minded so much. But ripped off and to be served such poor quality food... !
Great food hungarian style, menu of the day or a la carte with good prices. Diferent locations to choose from. The one at Kiraly street is really nice.
