This is from San Telmo and saw the show of the travel detective and the food was just okay and we order a Bife de chorizo and bife de ojo, which are tender steak and good. We also order an empanada that only average....The price is reasonable, especially the wine.
We arrived in Argentina for the first time today and decided that it had to be a parrilla steak house for dinner. We took a Uber from Recoleta to San Telmo and enjoyed our dinner in Desvivel. No pretense, helpful staff delicious food. We ordered an Argentine mixed grill, with Top-Loin steak and chicken, Fön Fritten, Maische Kürbis, two glasses of Patagonian beer and a 750 ml bottle of 2021 Malbec. Mmm, $20 for both of us.
This was almost a star review because after reading great reviews here and on other blogs and travel books tried to contact the restaurant and make a reservation. I sent them from the USA one week before our trip by email and tried to get them out of our hotel again and again after we arrived in Buenos Aires without answer. The information we had from several websites and books was open from 12 to 12 midnight and they did not take credit cards. Finally, we decided that we just have to get out and get a wealth of pesos and walk down there 1.5 miles to see this place for us. When we arrived, the door was closed. Then a man came to the door and said they didn't open until they were 7 but he showed us 6 fingers. He didn't speak English and must have been one of the cleaners. Wing back and knocked on the door to confirm the time as it wasn't 5 pm and another man said they were open at 6. This was not in line with the information we had from the Internet, and we almost gave up and sworn to write a bad review. Website must be kept up-to-date, please! We went back at 5:55 and there were already several customers sitting and eating inside. All right. Going back was a GREAT decision. Our waiter knew a good amount of English, but he was apparently the only one who was then. The menu has English translations and the food was wonderful! I've eaten a lot of French hairs in my life, but these were the best hands down. I had read a tip in a review and said to order your steak and your pommes frites and salad a la carte because the combination plate listed with the specials sits a steak on the top of the waffleries and the pommes are greasy. Great tip. Order Papas Fritas and then add the word Crispy, and get for about $2.50 USD You can eat more crispy pommes than 2 people. We also shared a huge salad. We ordered the beef tenderloin and the beef top lotin on the recommendation of the waiter and ordered them pink, because their definition of medium has been reported too rarely to eat. That was a good tip. It was perfect. And here is the best part of every piece of meat was 400 to 450 grams almost a pound and everyone costs only about $10 USD. About the credit cards: Unlike published reports they take credit cards, but my guess is that you get the official exchange rate. However, if you ask your hotel to recommend a place where you can get the BLUE rate, you will get twice as many pesos for your dollar as the so-called official price. I can't explain. It's what my husband used to call funny money in his days as an international pilot. If there is a place recommended by your hotel, it should be safe, but I would not just go to an exchange on the street because the possibility of being torn off with fake money is great, I would think. But my tour book had explained that this blue rate was also a good deal and it just worked well for us. My guess is that paying with a credit card would only be about twice the cost, although we found that many shops take your greenbacks at a price that was close to the BLUE rate. Bottom line we had one of the best steak dinners with local ambience for about $30 without alcohol. Our waiter took a taxi to take us back to the hotel 1.5 miles away and it costs only $3 $4 with the top. Very worthwhile!!!! RECOMMENDATIONS!
The place fills up very fast in the evenings, very popular among the locals as well as the tourists.the, Quality and quantity are very satisfactory. Prices are just right, no need to look for a fancy place, this joint is informal and the food is...delicious
