At the behest of friends of ours, my wife and I paid our first visit to this venerable restaurant that is nearing its fifth decade of success. We were there on a Saturday night, and the place was packed. Thankfully, due to my hearing impairment, our friends managed to book a table for us in the quieter anteroom, as the principal two-tiered dining area was noisy with lots of gleeful patrons. The owner and his hostess greeted us very warmly, and the waiting staff was extremely proficient and knowledgeable, our waiter in particular. Each meal starts with a basket of hot garlic bread served with a dish of olives, dill pickles and a pate. For those who enjoy a traditional Caesar salad, they prepare it at your table side. Our hosts always order it, but I opted for an excellent starter of beef carpaccio. I did taste the salad though, and it was terrific. While all three others ordered an 8-ounce striploin, I opted for Dover sole with a meunière sauce, as I don't often see it offered on most menus I've seen lately. The entire fish was beautifully baked, served at our table side where it was expertly deboned. It was one of the nicest pieces of fish I've enjoyed in quite a while. Each of us was served a side dish of tender-crisp green beans and delicious roasted cauliflower in a cheese sauce. We chose a lovely bottle of Chateauneuf-du-Pape to enhance our repast. We opted not to have dessert, so I cannot comment on them other than to say it is renowned for a dish for two of Cherries Jubilee. All told, it was a very pleasant dinner experience. However, be prepared to pay a hefty price for pretty well anything on the m nu and extensive wine list. Dinner for four, with taxes and a generous tip, came to $455.
We have friends who frequent this restaurant often, but they are far more well to do than we are. It is a pricey endeavour to come here for dinner. The food is not unusual or different, but it is always excellent. The service is about as perfect as it can be, very dignified and attentive, but not overly so. The ambiance on a Tuesday night was amazing - quiet, but the restaurant was about half full. You pay handsomely for your dinner here, but what you are really paying for is a prestige dining experience.
We have been to this restaurant before and it was great then and is still great, I absolutely love their ceaser salad, they make it at your table and the dressing is the best I have ever tasted, the service was perfect, our waiter was extremely attentive , we were not rushed at all, our table was booked for 7 and we were sat down straight away and we did not leave until nearly 10, it is a little pricey but so worth it for a special occasion.
