Had lunch here. We both decided to have Sardines from the daily menu, the menu quoted a 1/2 portion at €9 and a full portion at€12.50. Having lived in Portugal for many years we are quite used to sharing a full portion of,many dishes, between the both of us and therefore ordered accordingly. We were both amazed when a dish arrived with 6 Sardines on it. I questioned it, thinking that we had been served a 1/2 portion by mistake, sadly not the case. What a rip off!! It is only 2 weeks ago that my wife had Sardines in a restaurant in Sao Martinho do Porto being served 6 fish for €8.50. No wonder Tropicana didn’t have many clients when we were there. We had to call at one of the big supermarkets in Caldas da Rainha on our way home. I noticed that they were selling fresh sardines,of a similar size to ours, for €4.99 /Kg. I enquired as to how many were in a Kg, the answer being 14/15. Not a bad mark up Tropicana, you certainly won’t get any more of our money again.
A typical portuguese restaurant, aimed at locals, combines the restaurant with a bar. We went for dinner and were pleasantly surprised. The menu has a short list of fish and meat dishes but it was no problem for the owner to improvise something vegatarian for our daughter. The food was very nice and the deserts (all home made) were delicious. Very friendly and fast service while the final bill was less than 14 euro pp, including deserts and a bottle of wine. Amazing.
